This is not new, but is still the fact!

Excelsior College School of Nursing is the largest in the nation.:patriot:

The two groups Excelsior excels better than the rest are in are military Veterans and Nurses. Two groups in public service that I think are great!:hurray:
Non-Traditional Undergraduate College Credits (634 SH): *FTCC Noncourse Credits (156 SH) *DSST (78 SH) *CPL (64 SH) *JST Military/ACE (48 SH) *CBA (44 SH) *CLEP (42 SH) *FEMA IS (40 SH) *FEMA EM (38 SH) *ECE/UExcel (30 SH) *PLA Portfolio (28 SH) *EMI/ACE (19 SH) *TEEX/ACE (16 SH) *CWE (11 SH) *NFA/ACE (10 SH) *Kaplan/ACE (3 SH) *CPC (2 SH) *AICP/ACE (2 SH) *Sophia/ACE (2 SH) and *FRTI-UM/ACE (1 SH).

Excelsior has the largest nursing program because it's the only program that will allow LVNs, paramedics, respiratory therapists, etc. to bridge to an RN by testing. But, because of this, some state will not immediately license Excelsior graduates and will require additional clinical experience. Excelsior just settled a class action lawsuit because a lot of people were failing the last part of the program, which costs thousands of dollars to retake. Excelsior's program is unique and convenient, but may not be as cheap as people planned.

I've met many Excelsior grads through this program, even before I even enrolled or knew about Excelsior College, years prior. All states have specific regulations that must be met to gain licensure, so thats a moot point. Nevertheless, the CPNE validates an individuals clinical competency in the real world with real patients along with a faculty observer who documents all of their skills, clinical judgment, as well as patient interaction using psychometrics. If you failed the test you were unprepared, and lacked the knowledge.

True. However, you can get a license in another state and work in any federal facility/hospital/clinic in CA (Military, VA, prisons, etc.).

Also, someday maybe a MS in Forensic Psychology, just for fun.   Oh, and a BS in Animal Behavior.  And, maybe when I'm 85 a PhD in something fun.

I started looking at the program in 1980... just enrolled last week. I wish I had done it 35 years ago.

If states are creating additional requirements for Excelsior graduates, only, then it is not a moot point. It's not a matter of Excelsior not meeting requirements that already exist or were passed to apply to all nursing schools. Excelsior is specifically named in these regulations. Also, in some states, meeting the additional requirements is not as simple as getting more clinical hours. In Alabama, for example, they usually deny Excelsior graduates who weren't LPNs. People who graduate from a regular nursing program don't have to worry about becoming LPNs first. In Louisiana, if you are an Excelsior graduate who was not an LPN/LVN, then you have to gain licensure in another state and gain experience there before you can gain licensure in their state.

Obviously, if a student fails the CPNE, then he or she was not prepared. The question is: Whose fault is it that the student was not prepared? Excelsior provides no hands-on, clinical training. When their CPNE failure rates were super high, they acknowledged that the lack of clinical training meant that students who aren't licensed healthcare professionals were not appropriate for the program. They are still making changes to the admissions requirements. They now only accept LPN/LVNs, paramedics, and military corpsmen. Not too long ago, they accepted respiratory therapists, certified midwives, and physicians licensed in another country. They've also added additional prerequisites for the nursing theory exams. To me, it looks like they are acknowledging that the CPNE and nursing theory exam failure rates are problems that need to be addressed instead of just simply placing the blame on the students for not studying hard enough.

I'm not saying that the Excelsior program is bad. I just think it attracts more people than it's appropriate for. It's not really a program that trains nurses. Students are training themselves, and Excelsior is just there to verify competency.

I keep thinking about it. Still not sure I'm ready for that much relatively intense study though. Now if I could finagle someone to cover the cost.....maybe. Smile

Awesome program, it definitely isn't right for everyone though.

I'm always happy to complete the free application waiver for those applying to WGU (I get a free gift from WGU for this).  Just PM me your first/last name and a valid email so I can complete their form.
