Excelsior BS in Information Technology
#1
Can everything in this degree program be tested out? I'm not worried about the Arts/Science components. The issue is with the Information Technology components. There are 7 core requirements:

Computer Architecture
Object-Oriented Programming
Database Concepts
Data and Communications and Networking
Operating Systems
Overview of Computer Security
Project Management

Network Management Concentration:

Advanced Networking
Network Operating Systems
Wireless Technology
Telecommunications Management
Capstone Course in Two Parts
Information Technology Electives

I will be finishing off my MCSE here in the next month or two and then going to do my CCNA. I also have over 80 credits from the Navy where I worked as a Data Systems Technician.

My goal is to finish off my degree in a year or less if possible through testing. I have my GIBILL to use if needed to take courses but I rather test out. I am looking for feedback from members in this degree program.

Because this is a pretty specific degree program, most of those classes cannot be tested out of, you'll either have to bite the bullet and take more "actual" classes or change to a more general degree program...

I found this old thread about taking these ICCP exams to satisfy the IT core subjects:

Excelsior College Now Accepts ICCP and CCNA Examinations - Distance Learning Discussion Forums

Are the ICCP exams still valid?

I am also currently doing BS IT at Excelsior. I have quite a few courses already approved:

I have been exchanging emails with the advising team for a while now, thus most of the information below has been approved my advisor, however I suggest you get it approved non the less.

First comment is to change concentration to general, nothing counts for Network Management or any of the other concentration, where as MCSE counts as general core requirement credits. The two IT DSST exam also count as core credits.

Please note that all ICCP exams can now be taken remotely without a local proctor as long as you have a working webcam and microphone, it makes arranging an exam rather painless. Just phone the ICCP office and request to take the exam that way, none of the forms nor the web site reflect this. The exam application is located here: http://www.iccp.org/iccpnew/applicationform.pdf

Please note that I have only listed exams below, there are quite a few classes around with Penn Foster, etc, that satisfy some of these requirements.

This list represent many hours of searching, hopefully you will find it usefull, do not hesitate to ask any further questions.

Another point to add is the discrete math requirement, which is specific to that degree. I will be fullfiling this requirement using Game Institute's Game Mathematics (online course $225 no text book required) There are other options as well, but this is the lowest cost Game Development Tools, Game Mathematics, Physics For Game Developers

Quote:Hi,

Well, you're plan is looking very good and right on target. So, with that you officially approved for:

Game Institute's Game Mathematics for our Discrete Mathematics requirement

I hope this information is helpful. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any additional questions or concerns.

Good luck with your studies!

Sincerely,

zefrench, i was told by my advisor that

Comptia Security+ would not fullfill Overview of Computer Security

and that Comptia Network+ would not fullfill Data and Communications and Networking

If you are telling that these two certifications will counts towards the classes i am going to be upset. I already have the Network + and received applied credit but not for the class. I wanted to take the security + towards the other class as well.

Will Project+ take care of the Project Management requirement?

Comptia Security+ would not fulfill Overview of Computer Security

and that Comptia Network+ would not fulfill Data and Communications and Networking

Project+ will not fulfilled Project Management.

I am currently pursuing an IT degree at Excelsior and the previous exams will not fulfill any of the core subjects.
BSIT- Excelsior 2010, MCSE (2003), CCNP, Project+
