Excelsior Accounting Degree CPA track
#1
Hello everyone. I am trying to get my degree in accounting for excelsior hoping to graduate before august. the reason is that new york is changing there cpa rules. after august you need to get a master before you can get your cpa. I only have 60 credits from b&m i have to take all the core business classes and the accounting classes. i hope to take the accounting class through penn foster and finish the rest through bsu independent learning classes. does anyone have any advise?

You could satisfy 12 required hours through Straighterline (Acct I/II and Econ I/II). Someone on the boards indicated FHSU was now accepting the Econ courses. I emailed Straighterline and according to the director, "they (FHSU) are about to begin accepting them."

You might be hard pressed to complete all your coursework by August. Would the Penn Foster accounting courses transfer appropriately into the CPA Track degree program? I know a good number of the courses have to be from four-year institutions, which may make LSU a much more compatible source of coursework. Might want to look at the General Accounting track instead, this is a dilemna I'm currently debating as well as I've got 20+ undergrad accounting credit hours from a CC that I'm hoping to work into some type of bachelor's in accounting.
I m edumakated thanx to distunce lerning.

This was cut and pasted from the first website :
Q: Do I need 120 or 150 hours to qualify to sit for the CPA Exam?

A: Effective August 1, 2009 applicants for licensure as a CPA will be required to meet New York's 150 semester hour education requirements. According to the New York State Office of the Professions State Board of Public Accountancy, an applicant can be grandfathered under the 120 semester hour requirements if:

* They have submitted an application for licensure (the NYS Form 1 and the $345.00 application fee) to the State Education Department prior to August 1, 2009; and
* Their bachelors (or higher) degree is conferred prior to August 1, 2009; and
* They have completed all of the course work required to meet the 120 semester hour requirements prior to August 1, 2009.

An applicant who meets these three stipulations prior to August 1, 2009 may be licensed based on 120 semester hours of education, even if they pass the exam and gain their licensure-qualifying experience after August 1, 2009. Learn more about the New York State Education Department's education requirements for licensure at NYS Public Accounting - License Requirements.

A question of this nature is best directed to your Excelsior advisor(s) in writing. That way you have some official documentation to fall back on.

I did try to locate a date in the latest Live & Learn magazine but it only has dates up to 04/09 nothing beyond.

LSU is a LOT of work. StraighterLine is not as much work, and much cheaper. I would go with StraighterLine using the $99 option. Give it a shot, but keep in mind that you have set the bar VERY high. Are you going to be working full-time while doing this?
Degrees:
AA in Teaching, St. Charles CC
A in Religious Studies, NationsUniversity
Working on B of Rel. Studies, NU

Passed:
CLEP: A&I (78) Soc and His (65)
DSST: Tech Writing (72)

Other credits:
15 FEMA credits
64 credits from AA degree in Teaching, St. Charles CC
A in Religious Studies, NationsUniversity

make sure you contact Office of the Professions - NYS Education Department if that's the state you plan to get your CPA license. I would be surprised if New York allows CLEP or StraighterLine courses.

I have about 4 classes left to get my B.S. in General Business and plan to get my additional 24 accounting courses at my community college. For California, and many other states I have read about, they don't allow the 24 units of business and 24 units of accounting courses to come from CLEP or other type of exams. Those courses must be completed by college that is either Regionally or Nationally accredited. On my other courses not pertaining to those core requirements, I'm still trying to find out if my other CLEP exams would count.

When I spoke with a lady at the New York Board of Accountancy they said that they'll accept Clep credit for the business requirements. The original poster should verify this though but I'm all but 100% certain.
