Equivalencies for Biology Uexcels at TESC
#1
These were added as planned credits to my ASNSM evaluation.

Microbiology = BIO-351 Microbiology

Anatomy and Physiology (6 credit test) = BIO-213 Human Physiology (4 credits) and BIO-210 Human Anatomy and Physiology (4 credits) for a total of 8 credits. BIO-210 wasn't applied to my AOS maybe because of overlap? I would argue to have this evaluated as Anatomy and Physiology I and II. If they want to give lab credits, that is fine by me.

Pathophysiology = BIO-316 Pathophysiology

Basic Genetics = BIO-241 Human Genetics

The Science of Nutrition = BIO-208 The Science of Nutrition

Bioethics = PHI-475 Biomedical Ethics

Edit: I did a what-if for a BA in Biology, which made things clearer. The Anatomy and Physiology Uexcel counts as 8 credits of Anatomy and Physiology I and II without lab -- BIO-210 and BIO-213. It's still weird.

Is General Biology with Lab (8 credits) listed in your evaluation? Are there any CBEs or Straighterlines which may substitute this requirement?
#3
I have six credits of Biology from the CLEP. I'm attempting to get the labs completed through the Empire State College and Saylor pilot program for PLAs. Straighterline and a few other places do offer a standalone lab for Biology I, but I have yet to see one for Biology II. If you really want to go for this degree, you'd be better off taking Biology I and II as courses. One thing that might work, since it's too late to enter the Empire State College program, is to go through the Saylor labs and complete PLAs through Learning Counts.

Okay, thanks for the info!

I wonder if I could argue for a reclassification of Bioethics as a BIO course instead of PHI. This is from their PLA database.

Quote:Bioethics   (BIO-405)   3.00 s.h.
Principles of genetics and roles of the immune and endocrine systems; function of the brain; current research and rationale in genetic engineering and immunotherapy, including moral dilemmas presented by recent strides of modern medicine in contemporary history.

If they could reclassify it, that'd be a bonus! Would love to hear the results if you do it. That might save me an APU course. :p

.

IF you get to argue this, and they're giving you 2 of the 4's, it "looks" better in some cases to have anatomy for 4 and physiology for 4... not that med school is in your future, but you never know lol. A&P 1 and 2 are absolutely what I'd ask for as a plan b. I don't like their classification of Human Physiology for 4 and A&P for 4 because that "could" look like not enough anatomy credit in a case where that matters. Again, might be insignificant in every situation EXCEPT health occupations, but it's worth thinking about.

*edit* I don't know, maybe that won't matter with the lab issue. I don't like them assigning 8 credits w/o lab. However, I could see where this has the potential for being overlooked in a number of situations, because of course 8 always means full year w/lab....unless.... yeah- I don't know. Also, def push for your bioethics to fall under bio.

This is going to be a harder argument, but I'm going to ask them to reevaluate the Basic Genetics Uexcel, too.

Test Description

Quote:This exam measures knowledge and understanding of material typically taught in an undergraduate course in genetics for non-biology majors. The content of the examination corresponds with course offerings such as Basic Genetics or Introduction to Heredity. The examination assumes a familiarity with introductory biology, general chemistry, and algebra. The examination tests for the basic concepts and terminology of transmission, molecular, and population genetics and the ability to apply this knowledge to solving problems in genetics and to understand the societal implications of genetic technologies.

Human Genetics Description for TESC's PLA Database

Quote:Human Genetics   (BIO-241)   3.00 s.h.  *
The scientific principles of genetics as the basis for genetic counseling and referral. Examples of inherited afflictions that are wide spread or so severe as to brin persons so afflicted to the attention of the physician for diagnosis.

Genetics Description from TESC's PLA Database
Quote:Genetics   (BIO-341)   3.00 s.h.
A modern approach to understanding the nature and functioning of hereditary material in living organisms. Biochemistry of genetic material, physical basis of inheritance, and mode of expression of genetic material in individuals and populations.

They aren't going to change the equivalencies of those two exams. Sad
