Depends on what you've read in the past.
I like older stuff and Shakespeare and that kind of thing, so found English Lit much easier. The trouble with American Lit is that a lot of American Lit tends to be more modern stuff, which means it's totally vague and nebulous and it's anyone's guess exactly what "deep thing" someone is really trying to say when in an inane statement like "so much depends on a red wheelbarrow dripping rainwater by the stinkin' white chickens" or however that thing goes. hilarious
Bottom line, I found English Lit. a little bit more.........sensible, I guess, and easier to interpret.
