I see what you are saying.
When a tutor is looking at a paper to assist the student in making it better they have a strong incentive to find something wrong. Normally, this is how they help. This may be part of why the grading process is coming out so strangely; perhaps, the tutors are trying so hard to find something wrong with the very good papers written by many of the members of this forum who would be far beyond the average student.
I think this is an upsetting find.

yes they do have an incentive because they get paid per paper graded, especially those located in India that get very little money.

Fort Hays does not take Straighterline English any longer. You can put them through ACE for pass/fail.

Then that's how we'll do it.
Thanks!

I'm currently posted overseas and wanted to give Eng Comp I a go.
Getting my hands on the text book will be difficult if not take ages.
On the Straighterline website it says the text is not absolutely required.
Just wondering if anyone has completed the course WITHOUT the textbook or other views of how important it is to have the textbook available.
thx
or does anyone have the used textbook they'd be willing to sell and ship to the UK?

I completed English Composition I & II without the text book. For English Composition II I had my own copy of Shelley's Frankenstein and an ebook in the public domain.
For the MLA citation formatting/presentation, Purdue's OWL website covers the required information. This was supplemented with general Google/Wikipedia searches.
I've posted elsewhere on the five paragraph format which was most useful for writing papers. I found the courses to be genuinely useful in terms of being able to construct papers; additionally, that the courses satisfy written English requirements is priceless.
As you're heading to the UK, if you're a member of the US services, I believe USAF Lakenheath has recently opened its education centre. There are two other open testing centres in the UK. In London, you can test for DSSTs and CLEPs and in Manchester you can test for CLEPs, only. Administrative costs on top of the test costs are 50 GBP and 40 GBP, respectively. I have used both locations and, while a bit pricey, the administrators are incredibly professional, accommodating and friendly.

irnbru- thanks for the information! I am about ready to take English Comp II with SL. Can you tell me approx how long it took you to finish the course? Do you think it is possible to finish in a month if you the motivation and the time? Also, I took Eng Comp I many years ago and I am wondering how much Comp II will build on Comp I. I would rather not have to repeat that course. I am an older student and have a good command of the English language so I am hoping that will be ok. Any input would be greatly appreciated
