Hi everyone,
I've been going through the flashcard set for the English Composition CLEP and have found what I think is contradictory information. It's possible (more likely in fact) that I'm just missing something in the explanations. Hopefully someone can either confirm that there is an error in the flashcards or can clear up my confusion. It's probably not too difficult and I'm going to be really embarrassed for having posted this...
My problem is found in English Comp Part One (Basic Grammar Concepts).
Question 12 of 47 explains the correct answer as follows:
"The problem with this sentence is that it doesn't have a real verb. WHEN YOU ADD -ING TO A VERB, THAT CHANGES IT INTO A NOUN. 'Scrubbing' and 'scratching' are both nouns. For example, 'The cat was scratching the car's paint' contains the verb 'was', and the noun 'scratching'."
With that information in mind, I don't understand how the explanation for Question 37 of 47 can be correct. The question asks what should be changed about the sentence, "Liz's ideal man was going to be physically sculpted, incredibly funny, and making a lot of money."
The correct answer ("change making a lot of money to wealthy") is explained as follows:
"The problem here is that the sentence is not consistent. It says that the man is going to be 'physically sculpted', 'incredibly funny', and then it suddenly USES A VERB--'MAKING a lot of money.' Either every item should use a verb in the same way, or it should stick with using adjectives; whatever it does, every element should be consistent and written in the same way."
It seems to me that this is telling us that "making" is a verb. Based on what we were told in Question 12, I don't understand why "making" isn't a noun since -ing has been added to the verb "make". Can anyone please explain this to me???
THANK YOU!
Alison
