Will passing a CLEP replace a previous F?
#1
I took Intro to Sociology a few years ago at my local CC and failed. I am now returning thru online courses. I registered for only two to start off since I am going to be trying to CLEP as many as possible at the same time. I will be taking Intro to Computers and Intro to Sociology. The adviser recommended that I retake the Sociology in order to replace that F with a better grade to get my 3.9 gpa back. My question is this.... if I CLEP the sociology, will the grade I receive replace the previous F? Thanks in advance!

You are asking us if an unnamed community college will replace an F with a CR when at advisor at that school said it would. We don't even know the name of the school, so how could we tell you? But even if we did know the name of the school, what we say doesn't matter. Not even what the advisor says matters. It should be specified in the school's general catalog, but it might not be.

You should always view what advisors tell you as guidelines, not facts. Again, the general catalog rules. The custodian of your grades and GPA is the registrar. Contact the registrar by email and find out what the official policy (which can vary by school) is. Ask for a link to a reference stating the policy. Find out what replacement means. Replacement might mean that for GPA calculations the F isn't used but that the F remains on the transcript. If that's the case, you could get your GPA back, but if you apply to graduate school in sociology, you might have some explaining to do. If you apply to medical or dental school, you might need to explain the F.

When dealing with college bureaucracies, you must know the written policies and make your decisions based on those instead of hearsay.

If you don't have plans to transfer to another school like the big 3, and are going to get your degree from the school you are currently in, then that is a question for your school advisor.
otherwise, when you transfer a Course, only courses with passing grades transfer. So the F won't transfer anyway. So take the Clep and your set.

If I understand your initial posting, I believe you meant that your advisor suggested you retake your Sociology class in the hope of replacing the "F" with a higher grade. CLEP exams do not offer a letter grade, so I would encourage you to talk with the registrar at your CC.

Most schools won't allow you to clep out of any course previously attempted, meaning you have to retake the course. But of course, echoing the above comments, each school makes their own policy on acceptance of credit and only your advisor can answer that question.

Don't waste time by trying to save time. The only sure way to complete your degree is to knock out credits quickly and efficiently.

Don't let easiness bite you in the rear. Know your endgame (where you want to be) and plan backward from there. Your education is a means to an end.

Be honest professionally, socially and academically. There are people (especially little ones) who look up to you and they're going by your example.

Be proud. Whether you're an Engineer or Fast Food worker, there is honor and dignity in hard work.

Picking on people weaker than you only proves that you are a weak person.
