I really want to ve excited about this, but I am just not. I completed a technical school graphic design certificate program while in HS. The program was 2 years but I was was accepted a year early, and then spent a third year studying independently with the instructor. The colleges in the area were all willing to give me college credit for those courses.
When I went looking for a job though, even after scoring in the 98th percentile for the largest design firm staffing agency in the country, they still would not place me for work because I didn't have the bachelor's degree. The head of the staffing company actually brought me into his office and requested that I do pro bono work underneath him. I turned his offer down. I was young, and out on my own, so I needed to be getting paid. Sometimes the only thing that employers care about is the bachelor's degree.
With that said, the field has really opened up for those who are willing to work independently online and slowly build their own clientele. As the years went by I slowly took on independent clients, but having the bachelor's degree at a younger age would have served me better. I would save someone really wants to work in the field they either need to get their bachelor's degree right away, or else plan to work a regular job and do graphic design as a side gig until they build their clientele. With the internet booming these days there are definitely more clients to be had for independent designers.
