College won't take CLEP within 60 hours of graduation
#1
my college won't take cleps if you're within 60 credit hours of graduation. I think this is a dumb policy. I am scheduled to take a clep tomorrow. do you all think i can write to the school and see if they will maybe modify the policy or something?

I wouldn't waste my money on a test I can't utilize. I understand the idea behind it, after you're that far in to their program they know you want to finish it, that they'll get your money. The University I'm planning on attending has another odd CLEP policy, they'll accept your credits up to 30 if you're a student there, but if you're not enrolled you can transfer in more, but not after you're enrolled. I couldn't figure it our for the longest time, but finally realized it was about getting your money after you're already enrolled. Sorry, I know this isn't what you want to hear. It's all about greed.
I have 18 traditional credits and 51 exam credits. I've passed Introductory Sociology 76, Introductory Psychology 68, A&I Literature 66, Principles of Marketing 76, Introductory Business Law 71, Social Sciences & History 67, DSST Drug & Alcohol Abuse 450, Biology 69, Principles of Management 70, Natural Sciences 64, Intro to Business DSST 70, Principles of Macroeconomics 67, Principles of Microeconomics 58.

i appreciate your response. the thing is it's this Friday and i already paid my administrative fee. I don't think I can cancel. I'm going to take the test and I plan to get credit anyway. i don't know how, but I'm very shrewd. besides that they don't have the same policy for DSST. I plan on taking that next week.

I hope it works. I have found that communications between departments at Universities is terrible. Each one has their own little King and they don't like talking to each other. The Registrar doesn't talk to the Bursar and the Dean of college you're in doesn't talk to either. That can be a good thing. I have a friend that couldn't get approval from his college to take a class from an online institution and took it anyway. When his college got the transcript they posted it on his college transcript. The registrar must have assumed he had gotten approval to take it! Taking your exam without knowing you'll get any credit at all is not something I'd risk considering the cost but if you've already paid, then what have you got to lose? Who knows, hopefully it'll slip through the cracks somehow or a lowly paid and poorly trained person in the registrars office will just post it on your transcript...

I can say that I took Humanities CLEP 3 years ago and I found out they didn't take it at the time. I noticed they suddenly added humanities to the accepted list of cleps two years lated I called them up and they added it. ( I don't think they read the policy. They should have not given me credit because they say it's by the policy on the books at the time.)

I don't think I have much to lose but my money.. The thing is in the last 3 weeks. I studied atleast 20-30 hours for the college mathematics clep. so even if it doesn't count i just want to know how i would do. our school is so huge I really think it will slip by them. The thing is I still have to take classes that I can't Clep out of.

Just to inform you...it is not a "dumb policy." What I mean is...it's "dumb" for us...just not "dumb" to them!!!hilarious

Just like everything else in this world...it's all about the Almighty Dollar. Colleges & Universities are not non-profit organizations. They are in business to make money. Think about it, as I am sure some of you already have. Why don't more colleges & universities accept CLEP and DANTES credits? Answer...because they would be losing money!

Example...say you have the possibility to take 90 credits through CLEPS & DANTES exams. Now let's say you plan to transfer into NYU (New York University);well NYU charges $1,149 per credit hour. No that is not a typo...$1,149 per credit hour. So if you took those 90 credits at NYU, it would have cost you $103,410!!!hilarious Those same 90 credits through CLEP & DANTES would have cost you no more than around $2,700 ($70 times assumed $20 test center fee times 30 exams @ 3 credits each.)

I know this example is a little extreme but I'm just trying to prove a point. What school is going to want to lose out on that kind of money just so you can get an education quickly and a whole lot cheaper? Don't worry about answering that question...it was rhetorical!!!

To further illustrate this point, I briefly browsed Syracuse University's website and their tuition is roughly around $47,000 for just the 2008-2009 school year!!! That's ridiculous. In my honest opinion, there is no way you can justify an undergraduate degree to be that high (or Graduate degree for that matter.)

I only mentioned this for the sole purpose of keeping things in perspective. For all of us here at IC who sometimes get frustrated with the educational system in this country...let's remember this example. What it boils down to is money. Colleges & universities want to make as much money as they can, and they can't do that if they allow every one to get credits through CLEPS & DANTES. I firmly believe that if this "testing out" thing went mainstream, some colleges & universities would go bankrupt!!!

Another thing. I am not by any means downing the major institutions. All I am saying is that Economics is and always will be economics, Science is science, and Math is math. There is no way you are going to convince me that I am going to learn a different Pre-calculus at Harvard or Yale, then I would at one of the Big Three. So with that in mind, you cannot justify to me these costs. How can I take a Calculus class at TESC for $175 per credit hour, but would pay $1,149 per credit hour at NYU?

Just my 2 cents. I would like to hear from others on this forum as to what their thoughts are on this matter.

Peace be with you all.

I'm still considering my situation. my clep is scheduled in 2 hours. One thing I know for sure is they take Dantes but the thing is there is no "within in 60 hours of graduation" so technically i could take the clep algebra and be fine.

Just checking in to see what you finally decided to do.

I think it's shrewd how they make the system work for themselves. At my B&M school, I am down to my lab sciences for my first degree - and I don't want to drive to campus 4 days a week with the gas prices (over an hour one way)...so I called to see if i could take them at a technical college nearby as a transcient. I got the run around ---sure , maybe and finally when all of the 'heads' got together, they decided not. If I had taken it before enrolling it would count, but not since I was a student at 'their' college.
It really ticked me off.

I didn't pass the clep yesterday.i missed it by 6 points. The thing I didn't know if it was going to count anyway. I just wanted the chance for my own sake to pass it. I must say even if i didn't pass I think this test was wayyyy easier than rea portrayed. (i wish i would have used only ic cards. they fit the bill to the tee on the exam) i spent week alternating between rea and IC.

also i am going to take the dsst math computer based next week. there are no policies that i can't use it for the summer. anyone have any idea of dsst computer based tests are like clep? can you go back and check, etc?
