I'm working towards a degree in liberal arts- music- at Thomas Edison, and in the humanities general ed requirements, I need 12 credits. It says 2 subject areas. Does that mean I can take American Lit and Analyzing and Interpreting Lit? I really don't want to take humanities!

No, because those are both Lit. However, you could take the art history (forget the exact name) DSST..

Hi Kimberly,
To my understanding you CAN'T take A&I Lit and American Lit to satisfy the humanites requirement. The reason is that they are both LIT. If you go to this page on TESC's website it will show what each CLEP is considered. Scroll down to CLEP.
If you look it says that American Lit is LIT-111/112-CE and A&I Lit is LIT-291/292-CE. So you can take one of the Lit CLEP's and then something else. If you keep going down, it lists the DSST's. You could take something from the humanities section there too.
Hope this helps!

Kimberose,
Yes, if you would prefer the LIT humanities subjects you could take both american lit and A&I lit because quite frankly you get more bang for your buck (6 crs each). Then also take the DSST ENG201 technical writing exam; it is also a very easily doable exam. What they will do is take 3cr from one of the LIT exams and roll it to the general education section.
So your humanities section would look something like:
LIT-111
LIT-112
LIT-291
ENG-201
And general ed:
LIT-292
...
Others humanities options:
SL business communications transfers as COM-300. Or Penn Foster Business and Technical writing which transfers as ENG-216.

Awwwww... don't be afraid of the Humanities test! It's worth a full 6 credits and yes it's broad, but not very deep. It's fun and interesting to study for and even though I have a very VERY poor humanities and arts background, I was able to study over the course of just a week or two and score a 67.

You could take Ethics in America and/or World Religions. Both are DSST Humanities that are quite do-able tests.

I would agree with not being scared of the Humanities CLEP either. It was one of my first CLEPs I took (years ago, mind you), but I'm pretty sure that all that I really used for it was InstantCert and I did fine on it and I didn't really know any of the material before I started.
Of course, it's up to you, though!

Most schools will accept a foreign language as Humanities as well. That is if you already have a language you could use this instead.
