I believe the notions above that going to a reputable school for the position your friend wants is spot on. Depending on the university he wants to work at, he may even need to limit his choices to AACSB schools.
There are many great programs out there. Duke has a program. Carnegie Mellon has one also.Even IE Business School, one of the top schools in Europe has an online MBA (and you can do their exam rather than the GMAT). And now 2U, on online start-up, has been teaming with reputable business schools (i.e. UNC, 'Cuse) to deliver online MBA's, with required residencies and some with GMAT waivers.
If you friend really wants to stick for working for Universities, it may be worth it to spend the extra $$ on the above. But the only real way to know is to see what his counterparts are doing in the industry.

Don't waste time by trying to save time. The only sure way to complete your degree is to knock out credits quickly and efficiently.
Don't let easiness bite you in the rear. Know your endgame (where you want to be) and plan backward from there. Your education is a means to an end.
Be honest professionally, socially and academically. There are people (especially little ones) who look up to you and they're going by your example.
Be proud. Whether you're an Engineer or Fast Food worker, there is honor and dignity in hard work.
Picking on people weaker than you only proves that you are a weak person.
