Degree ideas for my ds
#21
ladyofshalott Wrote:Hey guys! My ds is trying to plan ahead to get her degree, however she isn't at all interested in the main ones (Business, Economics, Liberal Arts, Social Science, etc.). To put it plainly: academics are a real difficulty for her. Her interests are more in child training and homemaking than anything else.

Could you help me with some degree ideas from one of the Big 3, that would suite her interests?

Thanks in advance!

ladyofshallott Wrote:I'm sorry, I haven't made it clear that she does not want/nor will she train as an assistant teacher. All she wants is a degree that has a lot of "home-body" requirements. I know that sounds funny, but she is not the academic-type, really struggles with school...and yet she still needs a degree.

If there aren't any "home-body"-type degrees out there (which I wouldn't be too surprised about), could you give me a list of degrees that might be the least difficult?? And I mean as little math, science, economics, business, etc. as possible.

Thanks for your help guys!

I don't have time to read all the replies you've gotten so far, so if this is a duplicate or no longer applicable, just ignore it. Smile

She sounds a lot like me! I despise math and science, and I avoided economics like the plague. I built my degree plan with all that in mind. I included as many of my strengths as I could, and avoided my weaknesses as much as possible. I have a BA in History from TESC. I've attached it just in case you'd like to let her look at it. It's a really good plan for those of us who like to read, don't like math, despise science, and are looking for fast and cheap. I finished all the work for mine in 18 months, and would've gone faster if I could have focused just on school for the first 12 months. In all, this degree cost me about $8000 - that's including study materials. I could've almost cut that in half if I had been able to avoid the TESC course, but there just aren't that many history tests.

Anyway, I can only speak from experience. This degree plan served me well, so I'm kinda attached to it. I tend to proclaim it's merits a bit too much for some people. :p

You might want to look into getting a BALS at TESC but supplementing with independent studies courses from BYU. BYU Independent Study - Online Courses they have excellent courses in the area of family life. I'm not sure how they would fall into her degree plan, but she may 'feel' like she's getting more of the degree she wants.

Good luck!

If you could do so that would be simply great...for I was thinking to go for a course that includes the study of child development, but can't get any degree course as such.Sad

I have not been able to find it. I really wish I would've bookmarked it, but if I do come across it, I'll update here.

Charter Oak has a degree in Child Development, and another one in Child Studies.

Child and Youth Development Concentration (Major) at Charter Oak State College

She might want to look at doing an individual or liberal studies at COSC by using classes through BYU. They have several that focus on family and homemaking. The BYU classes are decently priced too.

Examples
SFL 110 - Food Preparation in the Home
SFL 260 - Family Finance
University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma - 32 credits
Oklahoma City Community College - 9 credits
Charter Oak State College - 3 credits
Penn Foster - 4 credits
BYU Public Speaking (IS) - 3 credits
UP- 21 credits
FEMA - 14 credits
ALEKS - Beginning Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra/Trig, Intro to Statistics, Behavioral Science Statistics, and Business Statistics
CLEPS - Analyzing Lit (55), Human Growth and Development (65), Educational Psychology (63), American Lit (64)
DSSTS - Here's to Your Health (435), Environmental Science (58), Business Ethics (442)

Completed my COSC BS with a concentration in Psychology in Jan. 2012.
Completed Penn Foster Animal Care: Dogs Certificate in April 2012
Completed Penn Foster Natural Health Care for Pets Certificate in May 2012
