Advice Needed - Degree Planning - Help Please
#1
Is there a slow and steady option to get from an Ed tech 3 so 90 credits to a teaching cert.  I'd like to do RTI work so intervention 1:1 or continue as a TA maybe teach but Im a bit worried about the paperwork of it all.  Currently im in the 5th  grade 3 days a week.  All my education was in social service and adult intervention but this schedule really works for raising my kids. Ive got some health issues and alot of commute time so flexibility and cost are key.  Attached my transcript waiting on the newest one but this is the basics.  Below are the state requirements or can get a traditional teaching degree!

Alternative Routes to Certification
There are a few options for obtaining teaching certification in Maine for those who have not completed a teacher education program within their bachelor's degree.

  • Return to school and complete a second degree in education

  • Earn a master's degree in education

  • Participate in a one-year teacher certification program

  • Apply for a conditional certificate with the Maine DOE while completing courses required for a professional certificate
Required Education and Experience for a Conditional Certificate
Each certificate endorsement holds its own specific requirements. To qualify for a conditional certificate, an educator must meet the following requirements:

  • Completion of a bachelor's degree (except for career/technical: a high school diploma or GED may qualify with adequate work experience)

  • Completion of around 24 semester hours of qualifying college coursework (or qualifying work experience)

  • Completion of a background check
All courses taken must be at a 100 level or higher from an accredit four-year college. However, up to six semester hours can be waived with a score of 60 or higher on a CLEP subject exam. For example, a passing score could waive an Algebra or an English class requirement.

I work as an ed tech at my kids school and nothing beats the schedule.  I'd like to have open options lots of schools are looking for that BA with the certification.  Ive copied and pasted the the teaching options in my state and included a copy of my transcript.  What would you do?  I feel like the BA will keep me employed but do I just become a teacher.  I love the work  I hate the paperwork Big Grin

Thanks I has some trouble with the internet and couldn't find it! I had assumed it was a glitch and gone issue. I've blacked out the PI and heres the personal stuff!

Maine USA
Age 35
I have 108 credits from one private RA college and 3 state schools  Only posted the most recent since everything transferred!
I've attached my transcript without the personal information.
I don't know what degree I want but I don't love that I paid for school and have nothing to show for it.  I'm a mom first.  Landed in education for the schedule.  My background is special needs adults and substance abuse. I may get a post bacculerate substance abuse cert, do case management, teach, TEFL and travel with kids. Go back to driving.  Run pony summer camp again. The double disability and life doesn't always mesh, so I want something that's a great foundation to bounce a bit and have a well rounded resume.

Here's a 'longer option'... Do you already have an associates degree? You can do the Pierpont BOG AAS with Biology Emphasis, get your credits transferred to UMPI BAS with a minor in Biology and Psychology, if you're interested in another subject such as Educational Studies minor, add that as well. It really depends what your end goal is, I would get the BAS or BLS with any minor of your choice. You have enough credits for max transfer already, having said that, if you want to add a freebie other than the Pierpont BOG AAS, you can add credits offered on the cheapies/freebies WIKI, these can be used towards the 60 elective credits for the UMPI BAS or BLS.

Here's the shorter option which I would recommend more, transfer all your current credits to UMPI BLS with a minor of your choice, such as Psych or something else that is offered by Your Pace. You're missing a language class, so I would transfer that class in by taking Sophia.org French I or Spanish I, get this degree as a 'check the box' degree and then do the UMPI MAOL or a WGU Masters in Education, if you want something not competency based, do the Bridge TEFL and ladder to the ACE.edu Masters instead. Depending on your need, I would wait for tuition assistance or reimbursement from work before I start the Masters...

Since I know some french that would work.  Couple quick  questions im not familliar with. Umpi BLS makes sense to me probaby in psych since its where all my coursework sits.  I'm good with a check this box degree since Ive definately put in the work!  A couple acronyms  could you point me in the right direction for this bridge to TEFL and ladder to ACE.edu masters info.  Youve alredy been so much help I'm going to look into french with sophia as first step.  Lots of Financial help here as a single mom.  Would the masters be a better route than the alternative training.

Link above would take you to the state school options.  The SPARC program was the one most interesting to me. Maybe a masters but its no a necessary.
