hello everyone,
I am new here and loving this great forum, so much great information is provided here. Little about me, After high school i went in the Marine Corps and after 4 years left active duty and became a reservist. While a reservist I was able to get AA degree in Criminal Justice from a community college in New York. I also have other credits from two different colleges while i was moving around in the corps. All is all i have about i would say 100 credits.( I will post my complete transcript here tomorrow so you guys can help me out better) My question is which school out of these 3 would be the best and cheapest choice for me in pursuing my BS or BA in CJ. I want to get the degree before i get deployed again for another 18 months. All the help would be greatly appreciated!

I would apply at all three schools and see which ones will apply the most credits to the degree program. I applied at all three schools for their CJ programs and Excelsior gave me the least number of transfer credits; it all depends on the individual. I usually recommend TESC, but since you can't completely test out of a criminal justice degree, just go with whichever one will accept the most credits and will be the cheapest. Keep in mind that TESC will accept up to 27 free FEMA credits to fill electives and does not require you to transcribe them through a community college (FCC charges $77 per credit).
One year at TESC is $7612 for the first year, $6,629 for subsequent years, and you can take up to 36 credits each year including TECEPs which are exams for credit. TESC only gives in-state rates to active duty military. 30 credits at Excelsior is going to cost you $7500. I think Excelsior gives this discount to reservists, if not, then it'll be $10,650. 30 credits at COSC is going to cost you $7500. COSC gives a military discount to reservists who are currently drilling; if you're not, then it'll cost you $9300 plus $220 per semester. If you're going to take all of your courses somewhere else and transfer them in, then all you'll have to worry about is the enrollment fee at TESC and the required courses that have to be taken at COSC and Excelsior. TESC requires less upper level credits and will transcribe community college courses as upper level as long as they match UL courses offered by TESC. I highly recommend checking out Central Texas College. They could possibly save you a lot of money and time. If your local community college offers online courses, check them out.
Charter Oak
$250 per credit for drilling reservists, $310 per credit for everyone else plus $220 per semester.
You are required to take 6 credits with them: introductory course and capstone.
Excelsior
$130 one-time enrollment fee or $395-975 enrollment fee plus $440-465 annual student services fee if reservists aren't given the discount.
$250 per credit or $355 per credit if you don't get the discount.
You are required to take a 3 credit capstone with them. If you can't take Information Literacy at Penn Foster, you'll most likely have to take the 1 credit course with them.
Thomas Edison Enrollment Option
$2,858 enrollment fee and $2,472 for subsequent years.
$212 per credit
Thomas Edison Comprehensive Option
Take up to 36 credits each year for $7621 and $6629 for subsequent years.
If you're active duty again, here are the costs at Thomas Edison.
Enrolled Option
$1533 enrollment fee and $1340 for subsequent years.
$157 per credit
Comprehensive Plan
$5176 for the first year and $4310 for subsequent years; you can take up to 36 credits each year.

I forgot to include that military at Excelsior have to pay a $465 annual student services fee if they choose the milti-source option over the course option which requires you to take 6 credits with them each year, at least 12 credits total. Also with the multi-source option, military personnel have to pay a $740 enrollment fee instead of $130. If you don't take at least 6 credits one year under the course option, then the student services fee is $70 instead of $0.

If you go with TESC, you can use Penn Foster courses to complete almost all of the requirements for the major. At $290 a course that would be a lot cheaper than taking them through TESC.
Requirements for the major:
Penn Foster's Terrorism was SOS440 Terrorism
PF's Victimology was AOJ380 Victimology
PF's White Collar Crime was AOJ303 White Collar Crime
Criminal Justice electives:
PF's Criminal Law was AOJ 251 Criminal Law
PF's Women and Criminal Justice was AOJ384 Women and Crime
PF's Criminology was AOJ103 Criminology
PF's Multicultural Law Enforcement was AOJ 354 Law and Politics of Race
You can also take The Intro to Cr. Justice DSST and the Intro to Law Enforcement DSST and the Cultural Diversity ECE

....Do they pay you for all of this advertising??
I picked TESC... They didn't apply a few of my CC credits (Criminal Investigation, Community Policing, Law & Society) to my CJ electives because they were "hands-on," but other than that they seem to be pretty liberal with credits.

I think he should be!
I just wanted to clarify the Student Service Annual Fee at Excelsior. You will pay the enrollment fee for the first year. If you do not graduate within that year, then you would pay the SSAF to continue your enrollment for another year and again for a third year, etc. It is not as expensive as the fee chart makes it look.
