Credit for ALEKS Corp (McGraw Hill) Online courses in College Algebra & Statistics
nj593 Wrote:. . .Someone here told me that they were on their 250th hour. Thats an insane amount of time to put in when looking for credits. For that much studying you could take the clep or dsst exam.
hope this helps.

The DSST exam usually won't satisfy College Algebra requirements (in fact, I'd love to see a college that would take it*).

The CLEP exam is so difficult that you have to practically master the material just to pass. Maybe 250 hours is insane, but you probably won't pass the CLEP unless you can finish at least 55-60% of the ALEKS pie.

One of the few other options for math-challenged folks cramped for study time is to take the Brigham Young online class, and that requires a few exams plus $400+ dollars. Even at 250 hours, ALEKS may be the best route for some. . .

*EDIT: American Sentinel University accepts the DSST exam as College Algebra, but American Sentinel is only a DETC-accredited institution.
Someone mentioned taking that he took the Aleks assessments over and over again and in doing so eliminated the many hours spent to work though the problems.

I'm currently taking College Algebra with 30 percent into it already...

Can anyone advise how to take the assessments over and over again?? I can't seem to find it on the site.

Thanks so much.

You have to login to the master account and reset the assessments to start in the students account. When you log in back to the students account they will restart automatically.
Hope this helps

Hi NJ: Thanks for the info.

I went to the Master Account but can't seem to find anything that says "reset assessment". Is it possible that I have to reset the password to be able to start all over again in the student account?

Thanks for all your help.

I think I just figured it out:

To request a new assessment go to:

Master Account - Student Progess Report - Request new Assessment now

These are the instructions on the new assessments:

ALEKS Progress Assessment:
An assessment is given by ALEKS to determine what your student knows; you cannot select the content.
ALEKS administers automatic progress assessments (each one covers approximately the last 20 topics a student has mastered).
An assessment can add or subtract topics from the ALEKS pie chart depending on performance.
You can request an assessment at any time.

Again, thanks a whole bunch - this is awesome!!

250 Hours? that is insane, that's Waaaay more than a traditional class and much more stressful I suppose.

nj593 Wrote:In order to get credit you need to assess at 70%.
You cant pass say in example with a 45% then do the pie to get up to 70%.
Atleast that is the way the guy told me. So what i did was i kept taking the assessments over and over and over till i would get the idea and format down. Then take the tests again till i passed. If you dont clearly know an area then the pies are useful. Otherwise the pie is a long haul. Again you might be able to pass with a 70% with the pie included into the score. But again i didnt go that route because it takes forever. Someone here told me that they were on their 250th hour. Thats an insane amount of time to put in when looking for credits. Call an advisor to confirm, I was told intermediate algebra (MAT-115) would meet my math requirement; I am a social science major.

Insane? Yeah, maybe. I'm about 55% done with College Algebra right now, and have racked up about 150 hours. I imagine that if I went the whole 100%, I might rack up close to that number. I'm thinking some of those 250-hour types might be the more math-challenged amongst us while some might be folks starting from scratch without even basic algebra.

More stressful? Probably just more frustrating. If you try juggling regular B&M classes or a fast-paced online course with a full workload/other commitments (e.g. family), I imagine the class would be WAY more stressful than ALEKS, even if you did run a few hours more than everyone else. Smile

My son racked up 150 on his class, but honestly, if you don't want to mess with homework and/or proctored tests, it's easier on the nerves.Wink
