Marc Singer, the vice provost for the Center for the Assessment of Learning who has personally posted here, confirmed that the Kaplan PLA course will be accepted in substitution for PLA-100 and PLA-200. He also confirmed with the registrar that the course counts as gen ed and intellectual and practical skills. If an advisor tells you it is just a free elective, then he or she is misinformed. You should probably contact the registrar if the course has been evaluated differently.

With the exception of the colleges that award free credits for experience without having to write an essay...
It is still one of the best methods for TESC students though, I believe. I plan to do this, but it's the first time I'll have to pay for PLA credits. In a way it makes sense, since someone has to be paid to review this stuff though. I think a lot of other schools, especially for-profits, give PLA credits away as a bribe to entice new students to enroll.

SweetSecret - the Kaplan course is FREE, and very easy to get through. And actually informative as well. I would be willing to bet the information found there would help you get PLA credit at many schools. It's a very well-thought out course, and straightforward.

I actually plan to take the Saylor PLA course, since it's also free & meets TESC's requirement for taking a PLA-100/200 course before submitting PLA portfolios for TESC to review. Besides, I don't have anywhere on my transcript/academic evaluation to put a PLA-100/200 course. I need to take the psychology of women TECEP, finish 2 upper-level courses (doing one TECEP & one PLA), plus the capstone course... then I am done with my degree requirements. After that, because I'm on the per credit plan, I just need to get more credits from TESC to meet their 24 credit residency requirement.
You may have missed this, but earlier this week I mentioned that I have a large number of PLA credits from other schools... this is just the first one I've encountered that charges for them.

Help! Trying to do a portfolio assessment and need to register ... but TESC is saying I cannot register for portfolio assessment at TESC until I've done the TESC PLA-200 course, which takes 8 weeks. I've already completed the Kaplan course for ACE credit.
I read on the forums somewhere that Marc Singer says you don't have to do TESC's PLA-200 course if you already did the Kaplan course... can anyone direct me to a link or other hard information that proves that?
