SALT LAKE CITY (October 2, 2023) — Western Governors University (WGU) announced today that its Bachelor of Science in Computer Science has been accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), the global accreditor of college and university programs in applied and natural science, computing, engineering and engineering technology.

Although the ABET accreditation isn't that meaningful in CS, it's still great to see them get it. Also, I find it interesting that they actually got it since most ABET programs have at least Calculus 2 or even Calculus 3 in the curriculum.

Hmm, not here to defend their actions or accreditation choices, for computer science, having the minimum requirements is all that is needed. I think it's great, having Calculus II and onward left out is a choice of theirs, I think that's because the course may not be as crucial to the degree as needed. The main thing is, BSCS has passed all needed requirements to get the ABET! Wow, I didn't even know they were going for ABET, wonder if they're going to do that with the BS Software Engineering degree that was just recently updated...

Yeah, it's weird that WGU's BS in CS is missing Calculus II, Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra.
I'm taking these at another online university.

Actually, just like the TESU and other degree providers available for the Computer Science degree, you can always add these extra Calculus II, Linear Algebra, etc into your AOS electives. They can be part of the degree, it's just not a requirement for that. For those who want to have a more CS/Math type of degree, your best bet is to add those as electives whenever you want...

These are for the BS Mathematics Education (Secondary) degree through the Teachers College. I suppose someone could get both degrees...

Also, WGU's BS in CS is missing C++ programming courses.
Last time, I was denied a developer job position because I didn't know how to program in C++ and PHP.
It looks like WGU's BS in CS is focused on Java only.
I'll try to take C++ course somewhere else.
