Completing degree with mosty Straightlerline?
#1
Has anyone completed a degree (associates or bachelor) with mostly straighterline or courses/exams other than CLEP? and with which of the big 3?

I did a large portion using Straighterline, Penn Foster, TECEPs,DSSTs, and CLEPS. Most of my courses were from straighter line though. My degree was completed through TESC. Do you have any other questions?

Hi! yes. How much would you say the degree cost you? Did you need textbooks?

I'm still working through mine, but I've taken --
27 credits worth of FEMA courses (they're free)
4 ALEKS courses (approx. $40)
7 CLEP tests ($135 each, incl. testing fee and REA guide, and 1 still to go)
2 DSST test ($110 each, incl. testing fee, and 1 still to go)
11 SL courses ($1,100 total, incl. textbook costs [not more than $10 each], and 5 still to go)
1 TESC Capstone ($687 and it is still to go)
When I say "still to go" I've included the cost even though I haven't taken the test/course yet. In total that is about $3,000 including all my books and testing fees. Add to that the $3,000 yearly tuition for TESC and my total cost is $6,000.

Which major are you taking up? I assume CIS? What courses did FEMA cover?

My signature block has a link to my degree plan which shows how much I spent on my degree. With straighterline I always used the book. I heard of people trying to do the courses without it, but they seem to struggle because the questions are out of the book and the exams are open book. I rented my books through chegg, which made things cheap, because they will refund a portion of your rentals for early returns. Some courses only too 3 days so I got the book for ~$2. Chegg also has digital instant access which allowed me to finish courses before I even got the book.

In all I spent $856 for 11 courses with straighterline over 3months. Its hard to say how much I spent in books because of the refunds from chegg. I believe that the value of theses course along with the cost savings was well worth the overall cost.

I'm doing a BA in Liberal Studies precisely because it was the cheapest and quickest degree I could earn. However, I do plan to continue on with my education. I just haven't decided for sure which direction I want to go next. Maybe computer science (I'm a software developer) or maybe education (a career change).

The FEMA courses cover all kinds of Emergency Management topics --- hurricanes, earthquakes, nuclear accidents, transporting hazardous materials, how to respond to emergencies, how to mitigate damages, etc. Just enter FEMA into the search function and you'll finds tons of information.

I completed 26 SL courses on the way to finishing my B.A. It was an indispensable program for me, since I had limited funds and my goal was to incur as little debt as possible.

So, 78 of my credits are due to Straighterline. I basically took every one of their Humanities courses, all of their English courses, and about four science courses.

The rest of my credits are one ALEKS course (for math requirement), two CLEPs, six FEMA credits, and so far one DSST. I have another DSST planned for Monday, and will be taking two more. Finally, I added two TESC courses to fulfill the degree. But none of this would have been possible without Straighterline.
