This kid got into some highly selective schools, though. Sometimes, these stories involve applicants who were accepted by dozens of schools with acceptance rates above 50%. Of course if you apply to 100 less selective schools, you're going to get into a bunch of them.
$125k is upper middle class nationally, but it certainly isn't on a state-by-state basis. If you live in San Francisco or LA or San Diego for instance, this is required to be able to find a place to rent. You can barely make it on $125k.
I hate stats like that, they have never applied to anyone I knew, as someone who was born and raised in CA. Median home price, median income, none of it.

I personally find these stories to be pretty boring. If you can get accepted into 5 schools you can get accepted into 50, it's just a matter of how many you apply to

Well, it IS impressive to get into Harvard, Yale, etc. AND get a scholarship to go there. The problem is with the article, it's not like that kid will actually receive 4M to attend any school of his choice

yeah but if you get into Yale you can get into 50 other schools. So this article could be about anyone who got accepted to Yale. Most people just don't apply to 100 schools like lunatics. I think I might have applied to 10, if that.

I can't imagine writing all of the essays! Even if you reuse the essay and just keep reworking it, that's still a lot of time and brain power.
