What happened to all of the educational channels?

Now that we're thoroughly trashing reality TV shows and the mouth-breathing audiences that watch them, I'm going to admit to a guilty pleasure: I watch and love Deadliest Catch. I think it is partially to blame for opening the door to "working culture" shows, but I still watch every season. There. I said it.

The rest of it can go away, though, and I'm not sure I'd notice.

I used to love the Real World before reality shows became so prevalent. The older seasons had more dynamic casts. In the last several seasons, they mostly casted good looking people who like to get drunk everyday and have sex with everything walking. I really liked shows like Baby Story and True Life. I also watched Trading Spaces on TLC.

I discovered an application called XBMC and have never gone back to cable TV. It is an open source media center with tons of add ons that connect to various streaming services. There are lots of podcast networks, documentary collections, music streams, etc and you can load rss streams manually for podcasts that don't have add ons. This is how we watch Democracy Now! I haven't paid for television in several years.
