College Mathematics CLEP
#1
Can anyone tell me how the REA practice tests compare to the real test? I have gotten a 50-51 on both REA tests and the first Peterson's test. I know that's probably pushing it but I'm taking it tomorrow....

I found them to both be marginally more difficult than the real thing. You'll do fine!!! Just make sure you mark the nutcracker questions, answer all of the easy ones, and then take on the toughies you marked. Also, do a quick cram on the things that make for e-z points: set theory, combinations, permutations, complex numbers, dice/coinflip probability, simplifying radicals, and fractional/negative exponents and quadratics. Synthetic division, polynomial division, non-coinflip/dice based probabity, etc. are nice-to-knows but don't warrant the crammage based solely on possible points.

Like Steve, I found the REA tests to be a bit harder than the real one. I scored something around 66 on my last practice test, but got a 73 on the real deal. The thing that will probably help you the most at this point is to understand what you got wrong, and why you got it wrong. Much of this test is just being able to think mathematically.

The concepts Steve listed are also handy to know. The Peterson's book should give an idea of what they are.

Hope it goes well!

Hey everyone. Kind of new to this whole thing but I was wondering where I might find a good site to study for the College Algebra CLEP test. And if the MAthematics course on this site will help any for that test. Thanx.

It will but I recomend scooping up a copy of the REA review book. College math has more breadth and less depth than college algebra.

I studied this site, and have studie the Comex guide and I keep scoring 42 on the practice exams (REA and Petersons). Do you think i have a chance at scoring a 50??? Are the practice exams harder than the actual CLEP??? I know all the basic stuff but the practice exams seem very hard for me. I need some insight because my test is on Thursday!!! Thanks!!

Do you really want to chance passing this test? Do you want to piss 6 months and $100 down the drain?

I'd back off if I were you, keep crack'in those books, and postpone taking the test until I consistently scored 60% or better on the practice tests. Remember, there's no rush, and even if it takes you a month or two to feel comfortable with the material you're still moving faster than the fools, er, students enrolled in a traditional b&m college.

Are you getting a scaled score of 42, or are you getting 42 right? Or 42 percent?

I would get at least 50/55 percent on a practice test before contemplating taking the real thing, but I can confirm that YES, the REA tests are harder than the real thing. I was scoring in the mid 60's on the practice exams I took but got 73 on the real thing.

Hope it works out,
R.

Thanks for your replies. Yes, I am getting a 42 score when I need at least a 50. But if you people are scoring about 7-10 points higher on the actual exam then I think I have a chance. What do you guys really think? Are the first 15 problems easier? (I read that in another post). I have no choice but to take the test and see what happens. I have been out of attendance at my school for a year and if I do not pass this CLEP then I have to take two math classes online to finish my degree. If I do not pass this CLEP I have to be back in school by September 15th. This is all I need for my degree to post!! I have been studying for over a month too.
