Hi,
I am new to forums. I just got my unofficial evaluation from Excelsior and I need a math class (Liberal Studies major) and about 4-5 other classes to graduate. I am VERY bad at math. But I really want to clep the college math.
I am using Aleks and instantcert to prepare.I have cracking the clep also. Has anyone used Aleks for the college math? I know people have done it for the algebra.I am having trouble figuring out which course best fits for the clep college math. It seems like I will have to do three separate courses Basic, pre and beginning algebra. Any suggestions are much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi,
I can't specifically answer your question about whether beginning algebra applies to the math requirement for EC, but some ALEKS courses have been reviewed by ACE. Check their guide,
https://www.acenet.edu/nationalguide/, and you'll find Beginning Algebra on that list. If you complete the ALEKS course successfully, you may not need to sit the CLEP if EC will accept the college credit recommendation from ACE.
The best bet in determining whether that will work and what math course will apply to your EC requirements is to contact your advisor. TESC does not mention granting credit for math courses leading up to intermediate algebra.
Hope this helps,
Sandy

Sandy,
Thank you very much. I think I will do the ACE beginning algebra. I tried a clep practice test on college math last night
Let me just say your idea is much better plan.
I was starting to consider the Penn Foster class last , but I am happy with Aleks and think it would be easier for me to stick with it.

for me, ALEKS was love at first sight, it was tremendous help in my College Algebra prep. However, documenting credit for me was a bit of messy process. You'll need to complete the course (100% of pie chart), register at ACE in order establish a transcript and then ask ALEKS to send ACE a letter stating that you completed the course. I winded up taking the CLEP College Algebra to fulfill my requirements.
I don't know about the math requirements of the liberal degrees at Excelsior, but I'd verify that Beginning Algebra is acceptable with Excelsior (for example, they won't take anything beneath the pre-calculus level for the business degrees), otherwise you should have no problem transferring ALEKS credit (provided you're lucky enough to be able to complete the credit documentation process).
Have a look here for a discussion about ALEKS credit:

Good luck!

Addision has sent me the forms he referred to, and I'm about 2/3 of the way through Intermediate Algebra. When I've finished and have gone through the process of having ALEKS report to ACE, I'll post an update, good or bad.
Good Luck,
Sandy

I am in the BSL program at Excelsior and the advisor for Liberal Arts (I believe Kat) said Beginning Algebra is acceptable to meet the math req't. I just got off the phone w/her. She also said Penn Foster's Practical Algebra is approved, but it is 3 credits ($90.00 per) so that is probably why it has fallen out of favor lately.

FYI, you don't have to complete 100% of the pie for ALEKS to consider it complete enough for ACE credit. When you've hit 70% assessed (the blue line in the percent complete report, not the green 'learning mode' line), you can log onto the ACE site, add the ALEKS class to your class list, enter the date completed (i.e., the date you hit 70% assessed) and hit 'submit course.' ALEKS will then approve the course in short order (5-10 minutes for me last week!) and then ACE will process it in about 3 days. Once it's been approved by ALEKS and processed by ACE, you can have the transcript sent to the school. Couldn't be an easier way to finish a math course, IMO. BTW, on an eval I had Excelsior do, they accepted an ALEKS Statistics course as the required 'college level math' for a LibArts degree.

Was the statistic course given upper level credit as suggested by ACE?

This was my experience as well. I HIGHLY recommend ALEKS. Very doable, very convenient, very inexpensive. Good luck!
