College Compostion w. Essay (Should I Risk It?)
#11
Do you think it matters whether you choose to write about famous people or people you know personally? Can you choose to make up a fictitious character as an example?

Using famous people's examples will give your essay far more credibility than using either examples from personal experience or fictitious examples. Here's a breakdown of how the essays are scored:

Conventions of Standard Written English (10%)

Revision Skills, Including Sentence-Level Skills (40%)

Ability to Use Source Materials (25%)

Rhetorical Analysis (25%)

If you want to get further detail on each of these categories, visit this link:

I would definitely try to use at least one famous person example, whether a character from a well-known book or a person from history,
it lends more weight to your essay than just a "friend" who you could have made up (Not saying that you would make someone up Smile !)

If you wanted to give an example and use an imaginary character like Suzy Smith to prove a point, that seems a little more reliable to me than using
a friend or colleague.

Okay that is a lot of help. =) But I went to the link and it says that you send your essay to the college of your choice. I not enrolled in a college yet so who grades my essays? Thanks for all your help Methibosheth and LaurieBTX!

That is only for College Composition Modular. The changes made to the Clep Composition exams in 2010 can be a bit confusing, but the important thing to remember is this: If your college of choice doesn't require Modular, then there's no reason to take it! Just take the College Composition exam. The essay portion of this exam is administered and graded by the College Board. Modular on the other hand, has it's essay portion administered and graded by your college (usually there's no reason to take that version).

Oh okay. TESC requires that I take the essay portion. I emailed them and they said they want to grade it too. Does that mean I need to take the Modular?

As best I can tell, someone at TESC is giving you bad info (their notorious for that). Here's a link from their catalog that states that College Composition General is good for both English Composition 101 and 102: Undergraduate Ways to Earn Credit - Thomas Edison State College - acalog ACMSâ„¢
Look under the CLEP heading, where the catalog states exactly which CLEP test are good for which classes. Incidentally, this page from their site along with the credit distribution for your particular degree choice are most of the info you need to plan your degree.

Is the exam taken in 2 sections? In other words, is it possible to skip to the essay portion first, then do the mulitple choice questions last?
