Disappointment

rickyjo Wrote:Wait, the credit bank transcripts aren't official college transcripts? I knew credit banking was often useless but I was unaware of this particular issue. I thought military was the best (if only) proper use for credit banks....

If credit banking doesn't work you can still knock out the FEMA classes anyway and send them through FCC at about $65 (or something close to that)/credit. You should be able to do FEMA at the rate of 1 or 2 per day. You can hit that 24 credit mark in a few weeks of steady work, alternatively, 15 will be a breeze, less than two weeks, easy(ish).

Here is the full text from TESC's college catalog. Emphasis is in red for my 3 comments below.

Credit Banking
Credit Banking is available to individuals who wish to document college-level military experience, licenses, college proficiency examinations and college-level corporate training programs. To apply for Credit Banking, complete a Nondegree Services Application, which may be accessed on the College Web site at Thomas Edison State College or request that a copy be mailed to you by calling the Office of Admissions toll free at (888) 442-8372.

The Credit Banking application fee entitles students to transcription services for one year. Students are advised that credits transcripted under the Credit Banking program may or may not apply to a degree program at Thomas Edison State College or another college. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that a receiving institution’s academic policy will allow transfer of each credit. Credit will not be transcripted in cases of obvious or apparent duplication or for courses deemed to be developmental.

Credit Banking students who later decide to enroll at Thomas Edison State College should file an application for admission and submit the appropriate fees. At that time all credits will be reviewed for acceptance in the degree and the student will be informed as to which credits are appropriate for the specific degree. Credit Banking is not available for foreign credentials nor is credit given for courses taught.

Notice that
a) you are not a TESC student, therefor you do not have an official transcript. This is called "third party" transcript, or what I like to call "credit laundering." The credit goes through TESC, but any school (military) will need to see the source and do their own evaluation. ONLY the school that awards your degree is trump, so everyone BEFORE your final resting place will be evaluated. In this case, you are not a TESC student, so the TESC credit bank transcript (unlike CLEP, ACE, etc) will likely be your only transcript that is not evaluated. Why? Because there is no original credit from TESC's bank.

b) just because TESC puts it on your transcript in no way is a promise that any school anywhere will accept anything. *and let me add, that before anyone evaluates credit, you will not be able to fly through with a credit bank transcript instead of official transcripts. (see my previous explanation)

c) TESC is not evaluating your credit for any degree, they are recording it. I can do that for you in my word processing program if you'd like Smile

Once upon a time, someone here made a solid argument for the use of a credit bank. It was a pretty specific situation, and yes, it did have something to do with military. I don't recall that specific post, but perhaps you could search the archives. We have talked about credit banking several times in the past few years.

No college credit is required to join the military.

However, if you DO have college credits, you will enlist as a higher rank, which will get you better jobs and higher enlistment pay.

It's worth the effort to get college credits before enlisting.

Enlisting with only a GED is unaccaptable, except at certain times or circumstances, as mentioned by the OP.
