College Algebra vs. College Math
#1
Hi all,
I've been out of school for over 10 years. The last math class I took was as a Junior in HS and it was a College Prep course. I do not know any sets, truth tables, real number system, functions or probability information. I am a quick learner and am good at math (for the most part). I have been studying the Barron's guide and can easily soak up information, but I am nowhere near a passing grade.

In your opinion should I stick with it, get some more study guides (your help is appreciated) and then take the College Math CLEP? Or should I take the College Algebra CLEP? I cannot find any study guides for College Algebra so I do not know what the sample questions are like.

I am a really good test taker, but I just don't know where to go with this.

Thanks everyone.

REA has a college algebra study guide. The best part about the book is the computerized tests that give you the feel of an actual CLEP. Just go to Amazon and order the book. Probably cost $20 and you must make sure you get the book with the computer test.

If you're going for a degree at Excelsior, you'll need to know that College Mathematics will not fulfill their Pre-Calculus requirement (at least the business degrees), although they will give you the 6 credits for it.

I remember Cracking the CLEP book had good quick review on College Mathematics.

For College Algebra (which fulfills the requirement), take a look at ALEKS (http://www.aleks.com), you can try for two days for free before deciding on the $20/month service. It's pretty addictive, sometimes a little slow, but definitely gets the results.

Gus, Just to clarify - Are you saying that DSST Fundamentals of College Algebra fills the requirement for Precalc for EC Business Degree majors? I'm gonna be thrilled if so....

I'm the king of procrastination. I first submitted my app to TESC in 1993. THIS will be the year of my degree completion![/COLOR]

PASSED:
CLEP-Information Systems & Computer Applications: Scored 62; Nov 07
CLEP-Analyzing & Interpreting Literature: Scored 57; Feb 08
DANTES-Criminal Justice: Scored 54; Jan 08
DANTES-Fundamentals of College Algebra: Scored 47 (and 47 is the req'd pass score! ); Jan 08
DANTES-Drug & Alcohol Abuse: Scored 57; Feb 08
DANTES-Ethics in America: Scored 55; Feb 08
DANTES-Organizational Behavior: Score 54; Mar 08
DANTES-Technical Writing: Score 58; Mar 08

FELL SHORT OF A PASSING SCORE (I'll never say the 'F' word):
ECE-Organizational Behavior: Score D (but passed DANTES version 2 hours later! Big Grin )

I'm sorry if I had gotten your hopes up high, but the DSST version is not accepted by Excelsior (Student Guide & Assessment Catalog 2008, page 27 footnote 5).

I'm really sorry, I should've been clearer (I assumed from the initial post that the CLEP version was being discussed).
