Please forgive me if this is posted elsewhere in the forum:
I've seen a lot of talk about Clovis Community College. It seems to be a really popular option for credit accumulation. Can someone please tell me why this particular college is more popular than other community colleges that offer online courses?

Clovis and New Mexico Junior College are cheap for out-of-state students. Some people don't have cheap community colleges in their district or state, so those two are popular options. Most community colleges charge more than $200 per credit hour for non-residents.

Out of curiosity what is the class load like for those schools. Are the pretty easy?

NMJC even runs 3 seperate "terms" each semester.
1. the full 16 week term
2. first 8 weeks
3. Second 8 weeks
They have a curious price structure in which you "max out" on tuition costs at 12 credits (so anything over 12 credits is only assessed the associated fees and no tuition cost) So one could theoretically take 12 vredits ist 8 weeks and 12 more the second 8 weeks....24 credits for around $1500. Note that 12 credits would be around $1200.
So up to 12 credits is about $100/credit...but you recognize remarkable economies when you go beyond that.
NMJC also takes a pretty good amount of CLEP...I would love to see someone bust out an AA there in 1 regular semester plus maybe a little summer work...I think it could be done.
Note they also offer most nursing pre-reqs including labs online, typically in the 8 week format....so you could conceivably knock out all of the pre-reqs in a single semester from a regionally accredited CC with a long history of BM.
One further thing...the cost of residency (dorms and eating plans) are surprisingly cheap...cheaper in fact than the relatively inexpensive Florida plans in my home state. Had my daughter not finished her AA via dual enrollment sending her to NMJC for a year was a real consideration...you can live there and go to school cheaper than many places charge for tuition alone...and get to experience the dessert southwest USA. It has a lot to offer!
Clovis, the one in NM, is similar and even cheaper if your taking less than 6 credits...but beyond 6 they really jack up the rates on out of state students.

You'll notice that Rebel100 is the very enthusiastic, New Mexico college expert around here. If it weren't for him bringing up those schools at least once a month, I probably wouldn't have known about them.

NMJC has been good for us. My son just finished his first semester there. My wife will be joining him on Monday. This is a great place to get credits.
We paid $644 for 8 credit hours.

How do you find the registration process?
Registration is a tad cumbersome. Nothing too hard but we had to follow a process in order for my son to do concurrent enrollment with high school. They asked for proof that he qualified for certain courses by doing prerequisites in high school. He had to request a waiver since he didn't show any admission scores. That was much easier than going to take admission tests somewhere.
Are the classes you want to take available?
Everything that we are looking for is there. He is doing some pre-nursing and other courses. He just completed A&P I plus lab with an 87. I preferred that he have a higher score but I am overall pleased.
Are you fully online?
Yes, fully online.
How are the instructors?
His instructor is there for help for the most part. She's a little slow to respond and vague in answering questions. I've become familiar with independent study and DL so this wasn't a shock. I pretty much expected that he would be teaching himself so, it's no sweat for me.
A full review would be most appreciated!
The school works great for our needs. They require 12 credits in-house in order to graduate there. I'm thinking we may apply for full admission and finish out there when my son gets close to graduation. He is taking some PF courses, CLEPs and SL as well. He started in January and looks close to being ready to graduate with an AS in May.
My son was originally supposed top graduate from high school next May but he may be ready to graduate with an AS in the same time period. Whoohoo! :hurray:
