I have some news to share with the people on the board. My beautiful and very intelligent daughter is leaving for college in a few weeks. She is a pre med program at a state university and has been fortunate enough to have received a scholarship for part of her studies. My daughter is a straight as an arrow student as they come. If it is not hard and painful then you did not learn anything. Here her mother is the complete non conformist. If they tell me I have to do it then I will question why and try to figure out another way to get it done. She is coming into the program with 12 credits from her AP classes and tests and she was very happy with that. When we just looked up the policy the school has for Clep exams she realized that they take more than we expected. So I said to her that actually with the 12 AP credits you would need to just have 18 more to be a junior by the end of your freshman year. The beautiful thing about being a jr. is that the state will give her an additional grant of 4,500 a year. So she decided that she would give it a go. She passed Analyzing and Interpreting Lit which they gave her 8 credits, Intro to Psy 4 credits, Intro to Soc 4 credits, and Natural Science which is 4 credits. She will be considered a junior by spring semester and it will actually afford her to move to the next program even quicker. She wants to get into a Doctorate in Pharm program and the university that she is attending has an articulation agreement with Mass School of Pharmacy in which she does her first three years in the university she can apply and if she gets in she does her senior year at Mass School of Pharmacy and actually will receive her BS degree from the original university. So she has already shaved off one year at her university and with the articulation agreement she will shave off her senior year. I am thrilled because I completely comprehend and understand how much time and money this all costs. So I figure she will be saving a minimum of 50,000 by just taking that handful of exams and having the articulation agreement available. She also wants her MBA so this summer she will be starting to take her business prerequisite. Sheâs a busy girl but she knows what she wants. She is so glad she knew about Clep exams she is now telling all of her friends and encouraging them to take and exams also.
Just thought I would share

Thank you for sharing. It is nice to see that she sees the wisdom of working smarter not harder! Congratulations on being able to communicate the benefits to your daughter and having her take advantage.

As a person who pretty much HAS to work smarter, not harder (and more expensively), I can definitely appreciate it, too! Unfortunately, since I am after a competitive grad school admission, I do not feel safe getting as many credits by examination as I would LIKE. It still saves me a lot of time and money, though!
PROGRESS: Last semester and accepted into a PhD program!

Allison,
What an awesome post! I absolutely agree with the whole "work smarter - not harder" philosophy. I think it is great that you were able to share your expertise with your daughter and save a ton of time and money in the process.
But, the reason I really wanted to post is to congratulate you on raising what sounds like such a terrific young lady. Not an easy accomplishment in this day and age. So, kudos to you and all the best to your daughter. She's very lucky to have such a wonderful parent.

As a parent I know how hard it is! You should be proud not only of her but also of yourself for being a success as a parent and student! You have been a great role model so she was able to learn how to work smarter and not harder. I'm glad she decided to follow your example and help herself to find her future even faster. Good job...both of you! Keep up the good work!

Wow, that is fantastic. I thought we had a good story with our 16 year old son being half way to his BS in business!

This is a really great story. Would you mind sharing the name of the state university she will be attending?
