I am thinking of taking these two DSST exams on the same day, July 5th if possible. Any ideas on study tips or which one to take first are more than welcome.

I found out today that I passed this test, and I thought it was "Medium" in my opine , maybe easier to pass this exam than civil war and recon, which I am afraid to try.

The advantage of the Civil War exam is that it covers a shorter time period than the USSR one.
I personally found the USSR one harder, but I'm a Civil War reenactor and a docent at a museum here in town, so a lot of the Civil War material was familiar to me. What I found most helpful for the Civil War exam was to make a chart of which generals were on which side and a chart of which side won which battles and the order and significance of the battles. This kind of kept my thinking straight. Of course, it's not all about battles.....be sure you know a good bit about the politics and political parties too. Both exams are very doable if you read a good thorough book on the subject and go through all the IC flashcards 3-4 times. I wouldn't be scared of either of them--they're passable, they just require more preparation than something like sociology or management.

I guess I will give Civil War a try, is it passable with just IC alone or do recommend some other study material to pass it?
Thanks for the Input!

I guess it doesn't matter which one I start with as they are very different exams, no overlaps whatsoever! To get started, today I'll be grabbing the Ken Burns DVD's and a book on Russia from my local library and I'll also be signing up for the IC study materials.

The Ken Burns Civil War video was absolutely the best for the exam. When I took the test, I was able to visualize the answer to the question. That plus IC and the student section for quizzes of the recommended textbook was all I needed to get an A.

I'm taking the Civil War exam today, but it's paper based so I won't find out my results for a few weeks, blah! Despite that I do feel confident I will pass. I ditto what others have said about the Ken Burns series. It was great. I watched it during my commute. I also grew up with a dad who was a civil war history buff and would drag me and my sisters to Gettysburg, Shiloh, etc. Wish me luck!
