Charter Oak State College Info request

Hi, all! I am so glad to finally find a forum where I find out more info specifically about Charter Oak.

I am hoping to enroll for summer semester. I have 62 credits from a local 4 year university. My degree plan with COSC is to earn a Bachelor of Arts with Literature Concentration, so I plan to take the GRE Literature test in order to gain extra credits toward that concentration.

I read somewhere that someone determined what they needed to earn more credits with COSC so that they could earn the degree in 1 year and not have to pay a renewal fee. Will COSC check my credits before I enroll? I checked what credits I had last night, and I think I would need to take the ethics class and maybe 1 other general class they require as I haven't had anything like that yet. But if I can test out of it I would like to do so before enrolling so I would only have to worry about my major.

From what I've read most people like COSC, so I'm looking forward to enrolling for the summer term.

Hello, I have a BA from Charter Oak with a History concentration and found them easy to work with. The best thing you can do is send them a email with your questions. They were good about answering my questions before I enrolled. If you haven't seen them already I attached the links to the exams they accept and the CPS for literature. Good luck.

Thanks, Bob. I haven't seen this before. I have been reading post after post and visiting the site and I always seem to find something new, like it was hidden away. I knew if I kept at it that someone would have some more info for me to dig up.

I figure that if all my credits transfer and I pass the GRE Literature in English exam, I will still need 40 credits to complete the degree. I won't know what they will have to be until I actually get to the program, though. I don't want to spend the money on a test, though.

Any thoughts, anyone, on how long 40 credits will take to complete? I cannot take a lot of tests at one time due to cost. It is cheaper than a class, but it's still about $100 for each CLEP with the testing center fee, and I can't do that very often. I may just end up having to do 2 years with Charter Oak to finish.

Question - what do the sections a, b, q, n etc. stand for under the general ed requirement list on the exam list? I can't find a section letter breakdown as to what section these apply to. ** never mind, found the key in the catalog**

Is the enrollment fee a calendar year or 1 year since you applied? If I apply for the summer, then will I not be charged the renewal until next summer or would it be January?

Is there a way to apply, see what credits they say I have, then just test out of what I need before actually paying for an enrollment until I'm ready to graduate?

My plan follows:

Assuming they take my 62 credits, I still need an ethics course for general ed. I have 58 left.
Ethics in America (3cr)
GRE Literature (18cr)
Liberal Arts approved tests (37cr)

I just don't know what tests will overlap each other.

If the enrollment fee is billed 1 year from when I first enroll, then I may go ahead and pay the enrollment now and register, but if it's in January I may wait and test some more.

You may want to see how you do on the test before you choose a school..while CO does give 18 credits for a 40% on the GRE (I am not 100% if it is 12 or 15 LL)..You can earn 30 at Excelsior if you score 80%tile or above, someone on here did it in Nov and there is someone who got full credit for Psy GRE taken Oct AND she is taking Lit in April,so it is doable. I am sure she would be happy to pass info tips etc along.

My point is if you have a 40%,CO will max credit...Excelsior knocks off 3 credits for each 4.5 drop in score ie 75%=27,then 71%=24. The break even point is 53%, that is where you get a matching 18 from EC, then any over that at CO does nada but at EC every 4.5 up is another 3 credits...and upper level at that !!

The best is if you get that 80, you will only pay 130 bucks..thats 4.30 a credit

Like I mentioned before. Give Charter Oak a call or an email and they will help you with your questions. It is best to get your questions answered from the source. They were very helpful when I contacted them before paying the enrollment fee.

If you decide to stay go with Charter Oak, a couple of ideas comes to mind to cheaply knock out those liberal arts credits. Assuming they can be in anything, consider taking the GRE Psychology test after the Literature. It is worth 18 credits as well. Also, do all the ALEKS Math courses you can. For $20 a month, it is a pretty cheap deal. ACE has 9 courses recommended for credit at 3 credits a course (27 credits). I'm not sure if Charter Oak would consider any of those 9 courses to be duplicative, but you could earn a good number for a cheap price either way.

Psyhology and Math both count as liberal arts credits at COSC. That is probably the cheapest way to earn those 37 credits that I can think of.
