Charter Oak Composition II
#1
Does anyone have any alternative ideas to completed the English Comp II requirement at Charter Oak? I already know about CLEP, DSST and StraighterLine. Has anyone taken a comparable course at another college online and had a good experience?

I had a horrible experience with English Comp. II at Clovis Community College. It was frustrating because I've taken and aced senior literature courses that were extremely writing intensive. I am proficient at writing essays and analyzing situations. The professor I had was just awful though, and it seemed like she was doing things intentionally to trip me up (waiting until the last 30 minutes before the essay was due to start sending corrections even though I turned it in days early. Then she wouldn't grant an extension, etc.). I was so frustrated with the professor's antics that I dropped the course. Later, I found out on ratemyprofessor.com that I was not the only student to have problems with that particular instructor. It was sad because the other instructors at the school were so awesome. It's my opinion that she expected everyone in her class to do poorly and refused to acknowledge that anyone was capable of writing anything of merit.

I say all of that to point out the fact that CLEP and DSST Comp. tests are standardized, and CLEP has two professors (I think) score your essay. That way you don't have to worry about just one professor's craziness. You run that risk any time you take a course with a live instructor. Add that to the fact that there is too much subjectivity running rampant in English departments.

It's not a hard choice in my opinion, especially when dealing with composition courses. I'd rather let a computer handle one half and more than one professor handle the other half, than leave everything in the hands of one person.

I think you can take Pen Foster Advanced Composition. I have not yet taken, but planning to take Pen foster Advanced composition. I have taken Straighterline English composition I and scored only 78%.

thanks

I know you already know about the DSST, but from what I heard from people who have taken it, Technical Writing is real easy. Also, I just took the CLEP College Comp last week and it was not a difficult exam. If you are looking for another alternative, there is the Excelsior College UExcel Exam and TESC's English Comp II TECEP.
CLEPS Passed: 10 DSST Passed: 11 TECEPS: 1

Don't waste time by trying to save time. The only sure way to complete your degree is to knock out credits quickly and efficiently.

Don't let easiness bite you in the rear. Know your endgame (where you want to be) and plan backward from there. Your education is a means to an end.

Be honest professionally, socially and academically. There are people (especially little ones) who look up to you and they're going by your example.

Be proud. Whether you're an Engineer or Fast Food worker, there is honor and dignity in hard work.

Picking on people weaker than you only proves that you are a weak person.

Kctcs is good if you don't mind sending transcripts. I am in it now and the professor has been great.

I took that same class at Clovis and had the same problems with the teacher

Was it the young female teacher? I had the same thing happen to me. I emailed her asking about a certain topic and she said it was fine, then a few hours before it was due she sends me a message stating that I had to write something different. She gave me a 50 on the first essay. I stuck with the class and ended up with a B.

Is there only one instructor who teaches Eng Comp II at Clovis? If there are other options, will you please post or message me the name of the teacher to avoid? I was planning to have my daughter take this class from Clovis.

Thank you!

I took the Technical Writing DSST for COSC, no essay or waiting required. Not bad at all, especially if you check out the feedback here.

I looked her up a while back and the professor I had is not teaching at Clovis anymore. She just taught there for a few semesters. I was unlucky enough to have her for one of them.

The reason I mentioned any of that was to give a plug for CLEP or DSST. You've got three people in this thread who had similar bad experiences with a live teacher (possibly the same one). We three would not have had the same issues had we tested out of the class. Just saying.
