I failed and challenged the results, which was unsucessful. The original failure said:
A professor teaching this course has graded your speech.
A speech graded PASS would be acceptable in his or her
class. To receive credit, you must pass both the
speech and multiple-choice parts of the test.
FAIL REASONS:
DELIVERY: The oral delivery of the speech lacked enthusiasm
and/or used weak vocal inflection, rate or volume.
Be sure to speak loudly!

Public speaking classes are such a stinking crock. I REALLY hated doing oral reports in high school. I had a public speaking class in chiropractic school in which I did fine but I hated every minute of it. I have had jobs that required public speaking and I was anxious and nervous before and during presentations. I now teach an adult sunday school class at church and my heart rate probably increases a few beats per minute but I don't have anxiety (maybe just a touch of nerves but very manageable). I can make jokes and be myself as I teach and it has improved my speaking abilities 1000%. The only real way to be an effective speaker is to do it ALOT. It is amazing how quickly one can become accustomed to speaking publicly and then start to enjoy the opportunity.
Public speaking to me is very similar to a physical athletic skill. Some are naturally good at it and take to it like a duck to water. Some are very unskilled at first but have some ability and with practice become good or at least proficient at it. Some are so bad that they will never be good at it and can only hope to get through it and go on with their life.
My point is that a public speaking oral should VERY RARELY be failed. It would be akin to failing a kid in gym because he never won a race or stunk at dodge ball. I would have a hard time not giving a minimum of a C to anyone that gave a good faith attempt at their speech. And failing a speech because your view is different from that of the grader is incomprehensible to me. I had to take a public speaking class a few years ago at my local community college. We were allowed to video tape our presentations and send them in to the instructor. Low pressure and I assume most made As and Bs if they hit the main points.

I also failed the speech and had it challenged only to fail again. Something about me being not convincing enough. Although, I'm confident If I made the same speech in a speech class I would have had an A. I decided to take the speech class that my college offered, and I found it to be a fun and rewarding experience. The techniques I learned were very helpful especially in other classes where I had to give a presentation. The price I paid for everything makes me sick to my stomach... The DSST was around $100 and challenging it I believe was $20, then taking the class was $540 plus the book was $60. $720... that's a brand new high quality amp, or a used American Fender stratocaster I always wanted... :nopity:

These graders are a bunch of university rejects, who like Ted Kaczynski, sit behind close doors and pass judgment on anybody who doesnât hold there twisted view of the world.
Yeah thatâs the unfortunate thing about tests like DSST Public Speaking or Clep Composition, that are partially graded by some professor, who will naturally grade through his bias.

The Public Speaking DSST exam is a scam. I've given speeches and presentations to hundreds of people yet failed the speech portion because my speech "lacked credibility".
I challenged and also got another fail this time they claimed that the speech was the wrong type even though I knew it was the right type. I requested an appeal and also failed that as well with no reason given this time.
If you need the credits in this area, Intro to World Religions is the way to go.

This is not universally true. If you are in Texas, the DSST Introduction to Public Speaking counts as SPCH 1315 Fundamentals of Public Speaking, which is a category 011 course in the Texas Common Core Curriculum. DSST Introduction to World Religions is PHIL 1304 Introduction to World Religions, which is in category 040. Neither of these courses can be substituted for the other.
