Literally, a few million people on fall Saturday afternoons attend football games at college campuses across the country. Because you have no interest in it, doesn't mean plenty of other people don't. Additionally, I don't see where it's so odd or wrong to wish to have some sort of non-academic ties to your school. Seems pretty rational to me to want be able to catch a sporting event, or a play, or a homecoming festival at the school where you graduated.
And dfrecore, actually I'd probably go to a football game every year. I enjoy traveling, and I enjoy sports. I've been to lots of places and events in states other than the one I live in.
Are these things a dealbreaker? No. But I don't think they're as ludicrous as you guys have judged them to be.
Sorry to have offended, but you said you were having an existential crisis. I guess if everyone you ask just agrees with your determination, then you won't have a crisis anymore, because you've surrounded yourself with Yes Men. But since you asked, I gave my opinion - I just thought that it was a silly reason to choose a school.
Obviously, you will choose not to take my advice, but at least you have some opinions from people who don't agree with you. If everyone in my life just agreed with me, no matter how silly my reasoning, I would get some new people in my life who did NOT agree with me all of the time. I want to be challenged and argued with sometimes. I know with 100% certainty that I make mistakes or don't use good reasoning to come to a conclusion. If just one person questions my decision-making, then I am thankful for that, because I will have to think harder about why I'm making my decision. I ultimately may not agree with them or take their advice, but I WILL listen and think more because of what they say.
