My university offered more credit for 5's from the AP exams that I took in high school, but I've since learned that they have capped credit equivalencies--like many other competing universities--in that 3's aren't accepted for credit, and AP exam scores only count as general electives now. CLEP is only accepted in the professional students program, but some exams require as high as a 66 for credit.
It's been a trend among those universities, since they would want students to take more of their own courses. Kind of self-serving, naturally.
AP/IB prepares students much more effectively than multiple choice CLEP exams, because students are forced to truly delve deep into material and demonstrate a level of analysis and synthesis that just isn't assessed in CLEP. However, if your goal is just to get a degree and get out, you aren't a high school student anymore, and/or CLEP is accepted where you want to attend, it will be the way to do it quickly.
