CLEP College Composition
#1
I just got back from attempting to take my first ever CLEP exam: College Composition. I prepped with the official study guide and IC and found the multiple choice section (50 questions with 50' to complete) to be reasonably easy, but time seemed a bit tight. I have a pretty bad cold and feel a bit groggy, so that could be why the time seemed so tight. I was unable to complete either essay *Ugh*. The time just wasn't enough. Again, being a bit under the weather could have something to do with it, or maybe just being very analytical and slow to develop cogent arguments was the reason. I'm not a fast writer, but I generally write very well. I didn't do any practice essay writing. Does anyone know if there is a resource to allow you to practice essay writing under a time constraint and get feedback?

Has anyone else run out of time on the essay section? Is there any hope of still passing? It looks like it will be a couple weeks before I get my results.

Sincerely,

I lean toward traditional coursework for composition. Writing is one skill that benefits every college student regardless of major. Taking a course through a program like BYU Independent is worth its weight in gold.

A coworker of mine didn't finish either essay but still passed with a high enough score for the 6 credits.

I ended up taking the CLEP just to get it over with and get the credits. I'm an English major who has taken and passed Senior-level courses, so I don't feel like I missed out on anything.

From what I've heard, you do have hope of passing if you run out of time. I ran out of time on my first essay, but had completed most of the conclusion paragraph I was working on. I think I will still be alright since my argument was cohesive, well-written, and on-topic. As long as you were able to show those things, I would guess that you will be fine.

For practice writing check out the GRE website: https://www.dxrgroup.com/cgi-bin/scoreitnow/index.pl

For $20 they will score two essays and give you a list of prompts that might be on the GRE. You may not take the GRE, but that would be even more practice for you.
