What's the best plan here? I have minimal credits from a community College 15+ years ago. I know wgu only allows 90 transfer credits and has a ton for writing. Is it possible to get more than 90 alternative credits with the big 3?

The degrees at WGU College of IT actually have much less writing compared to other schools. Some are more focused on a single exam or certification test to pass a course, while others focus on things like coding projects, or a combination of project and exam. Even better, the writing is effectively zero pressure because there's no penalty for resubmitting papers.

For most schools, 90 transfer credits of any kind is the maximum. WGU is probably slightly above average here, because a lot of schools only allow 30-60 credits in transfer - and not even from alternate sources.

At TESU, you can transfer in up to 114 credits. HOWEVER, 1.) you would need to get a Comp Sci degree, not an IT degree 2.) they do have a 90 credit limit on alternate sources, but you can use TECEP exams and/or writing-free ASU Universal Learner classes to make up the difference 3.) the capstone and cornerstones would have papers of significant length that you'd need to write.

That's the thing, 30 credits (at WGU they're called competency units or CUs) is the minimum, but it's typically closer to 60 CUs for students trying to transfer in. WGU doesn't have electives, so there's no filler - every course must have a direct transfer. Because of this, it's not as easy to get to the maximum 90 CUs. However, because WGU is competency-based, their courses will be closer to alternative credit providers than most other schools. And the degrees do vary in the courses required, so you'll want to review the requirements for the different degrees to figure out which one will suit your style best.

Most people who finish WGU in one term have experience in their degree field, which helps to pass the course by passing the one test/certification or completing the project/paper quickly. It should also be noted that there is information that can be leveraged for various courses/certifications, like reddit posts, udemy courses, study guides, quizlets, example projects/papers, etc., to help students get through the courses faster.

Basically, what you're asking really depends on the student scenario and their study habits. If you're into self paced work, WGU is the way to go as they use a competency based education approach. Having said that, if you're looking to exam/max transfer credits, and you're OK with a BACS or even a BSBA CIS, then TESU may be the ticket for transferring 114 credits.

It really depends what your meaning of 'alternative credits' are... if you're referring to self paced RA equivalent courses/exams such as ASU UL, Outlier, TEL Learning/TECEPs and more as an alternative credit option, then TESU/Excelsior is your best bet as they allow a max of 113/114 credits to be transferred in addition to the ACE/NCCRS options. TESU requires 30 RA credits, 90 ACE/NCCRS, Excelsior just needs the 7 RA, the remaining 113 can be all ACE/NCCRS...
