Excelsior College - B.S. Global Business
#1
Hey guys, just stumbled across this site and it seems to be populated with a lot of individuals who have a lot of information about the "big 3" and college credit by examination.

I went to Florida State and was supposed to graduate last year but ended up dropping out two years ago because the cost of attending the school was too high. I recently found Excelsior offers competitively priced exams and courses so I thought I would attempt to finish my degree with them.

Does anyone recommend any other schools that may fit my career goals? I'm interested in Business, but my main focus is "international". I've lived in 5 different countries the last 5 years so anything relating to international is good for me. From the information I've read it seems Excelsior is the way to go, but I'm definitely open to suggestions.

I am attempting to finish my degree as soon as possible for as cheap as possible. I still do not completely understand the enrolling process and the proper steps to take, but I wanted to get some advice before I started paying.

I have listed my credits below... can anyone help?

Thanks!

Ryan

Hi Ryan,
Welcome to the board! The great news is that InstaCert is an excellent primary source for passing the Business core for either Excelsior or TESC. I graduated from Excelsior with a BS Business, my son will graduate from TESC with a BSBA. You can do comparisons for the two schools and programs to decide which one best suits your goals. My only suggestion to you is to try and knock off as much of the the common core requirements first, then go for the specialized (International Management) courses. This will give you more flexibility and potentially save you money in case you opt for a general business degree. Filling the IM concentration could cost significantly more money than a normal general business degree. This is not meant to be discouraging since you can fill the concentration with testing out of certain courses and from courses taken at other schools like International Marketing here Distance Learning, Business Courses, Extended Studies, Adams State College

Either way you want to complete at least 90 credits or make sure you are within a year of graduating before enrolling in either school. The reason is that the enrollment fee is year to year, not a one time fee.

The people on this board will help guide you through the process. Also use the search function to look up previous discussion comparing the Excelsior BS Business and TESC BSBA.

Good luck!

You could take some courses or challenge exams thru Athabasca University.
They are in Canada but are regionally accredited in the states. I'm not sure which body accredits them. It is on their website which means they have transferable credits to US colleges. I'm in the same boat as you. I want a degree with courses on international and global development. I searched the internet and only found very expensive courses. A lot of these courses were Canadian or British. Athabasca is the only choice I found. it is weird that these courses are so expensive. Do you want to spend $1200 for 3 credits on how to eliminate poverty in a developing country. You ring up a huge student loan to get a degree that gives you a job promise with a non profit organization that only pays less than US minimum wage. You can't pay it off. I question the value of these boutique courses. There are enough unemployed highly educated people in a lot of countries that have a better grip on their countries problems. I can see the value of a highly specialized mining engineer or English teacher that has a skill set. It is sad that these courses are only affordable to the 1 percent.
It would be better to have people with a skill set from middle America. There is nothing more inappropriate than a rich kid visiting a poor country telling them how to develop their irrigation system. UTEP in El Paso offers a certificate in border studies. The 3 course 9 credit course costs about $5000 for out of state students. I have travelled to the Mexican border towns. Do I need to pay $5000 to study poverty? I paid $120 for a 2 day discovery tour to Jaurez. If I have to shell out $5000 I will pay Habitat For Humanity to build a house for a family

Sorry for the rant.....Google 'global' on the Athabasca course list. There are a lot of interesting courses.
