I love Excelsior, that's why I got a degree from them, but Thomas Edison State College just sounds better, which is why I'm getting a degree from them too.

Thomas Edison is the best. The school is for adult and self directed learners and Mr. Edison acquired almost all of his knowledge through self directed learning. What is the reasoning behind the COSC and EC names?

Edison is overrated IMHO and the school name sounds millish to me. "Get your degree now!! Just $29.95"

For sheer look-em-in-the-eye credibility, Charter Oak, hands down.

Lol.. I voted TESC even though I go to COSC. I don't really care though, noone has heard of any of them. I do like the idea that it's a state college.

This way when someone asks where I went to school, I tell them Charter Oak, and they say "oh I haven't heard of it", I can say "It's a small state college in Conneticut"

...Of course if you go to EC, you could just as easily say that you went to a small private college back east.

TESC.

I could have gone to EX or COSC; ultimately, it came down to EX or TESC (COSC was to expensive, in comparison). I chose TESC over EX, even though I'm from NY and tuition might have been a little less expensive because of

1. The name (I personally think TE sounds better than EX) and I'm a TE (the person) fan.
2. Ease of understanding the website and I heard good things about blackboard
3. I liked the comprehensive tuition plan.

The purple didn't exactly trip my switches....not than mauve and tan are my favorite colors...just saying.

I voted "meh". Names only every sound bad or unimportant to me. I don't get how anybody hears how a school's name rolls off the tongue and attaches any meaning to it. I know that happens, but it's beyond me.

I'm from New Jersey and actually lived in Edison and I couldn't care less about having Thomas Edison's name attached to my school.

"Charter Oak State" sounds like three words just thrown together. What state? Are there oak trees at the campus that I'll never go to? Does "charter" have something to do with those schools where you have to win a lottery to get into?

I'm enrolled at Excelsior. I will never be able to hear that word without picturing Stan Lee shouting it in some 35 year old Spider-Man comic. 'nuff said

While I agree with Kaz about all of them being sort of meh, I chose EC. At first I didn't like the name Excelsior, but now I like it best. A while back, I was discussing the names of the three with a friend and she said that the name Excelsior instantly made her think of old ivy-covered brick buildings. Ever since, that image has stuck in my mind even though no such campus exists. I do wish that EC would change the design of their website though- it looks terrible IMO.

To answer everyone's questions above...

Excelsior is the motto of the state of New York. It is a latin word that became a loan word in Old English (not the drink, the language ). It means "ever upward."

Charter Oak is a part of Connecticut's folklore. When King James II took over as England's ruler, he set out to consolidate several of the northeastern colonies into one large colony. A part of this mandate was that the constitution for each colony would be seized and made void. When the official sent by King James arrived, an altercation occurred as he was about to collect the constitution, and it was whisked away to be hidden. According to the legend, a large white oak tree (which really existed, and was to be later named the "Charter Oak") in Hartford, CT (the state's capitol) was its secret hiding place. The tree, although having since been blown away by a storm, has symbolic historical value to Connecticut.

Charter Oak sounds like a suburban boarding school to me. Thomas Edison is alright, but really, I like Excelsior - it was my favorite even before I enrolled there! It has class. And classes. And that annoying orientation course that I have yet to finish.
