If you're not going to go past the AAS, there's no reason not to take the CLEP Modular. If someday he wants to go further, it's easy enough to cross that bridge when you get there.
My kid needs English Comp I for his AAS. He's going to take the CLEP Modular. If at some point he wants to get a bachelor's degree, we'll figure out THEN what he needs to do. He can always choose a school that will accept the CLEP, or figure out another avenue then. No need to borrow trouble.
