Bank exec told me she'd never hire a PMP
#1
I spoke with a Bank of America exec the other day and we had a discussion about my pursuing a MSPM. I told her my goals and how my employer was encouraging it since we use legal project management in our firm. I also told her that I was interested in possibly working in corporate one day at a place like Bank of America or Wells Fargo (legal department). She scoffed and said she worked at BOA and that she'd never hire someone who had a MSPM because she does not believe in Project Management education programs. She said people who have gone through those programs are too rigid and resistant to thinking outside the box. She said PMP's are even worse as they do not know how to think outside of the box in order to turn the ship around when necessary. She said when you talk to a PMP they have to go through 30 steps to make one change and that they lack the creativity and ability to streamline issues.

We were volunteering at an organization event and I was with her for several long hours. lol
Don't miss out on something great just because it might also be difficult.

That's awesome, I was just passed over for a job I thought was a lock because, get this......I didn't have a project management certificate. Smile

You have to check the box, but it seems more important to play the popularity game than anything.

Okay, was she someone from BOA's legal department? If so, you might want to check with Wells Fargo's legal department. If you walk down the road, and someone calls you a jackass, ignore him/her. If someone else does? Check and see if your ears are growing.

It may be that it's not the degree they're looking to hire.

No she is over IT. I'm not going to let it deter me from what I've already started. I just thought that was interesting. She doesn't have a graduate degree in anything so it was hard for me go gauge her motive.

I know a few IT folks, and they tend to be education averse. They are the trial and error types prone to disdaining theory. This may or may not explain her behavior, but I notice that PMP certs generally do nothing but help, than hurt as she suggests.

Don't waste time by trying to save time. The only sure way to complete your degree is to knock out credits quickly and efficiently.

Don't let easiness bite you in the rear. Know your endgame (where you want to be) and plan backward from there. Your education is a means to an end.

Be honest professionally, socially and academically. There are people (especially little ones) who look up to you and they're going by your example.

Be proud. Whether you're an Engineer or Fast Food worker, there is honor and dignity in hard work.

Picking on people weaker than you only proves that you are a weak person.

I worked for a large health insurance company for a few years and the IT department was so large that it had its own PMO. The PMP was the gold standard and if a PM didn't have it, they were put in a training program to get it.

Accept for those of us that are here, right? Wink

I don't know that IT people are averse to higher education, its just that with the right experience and certifications, you can make a good living in IT.

Sounds like this lady is falling into her own belief trap.
