First off, I'd like to thank everyone here who has helped me over the past six months. Secondly, I'd like to apologize to two special members who reached out to assist me with questions regarding TESC and whom I complained to once I realized that though I have 81 hours, I will not be able to finish due to family financial constraints. In today's society, I am not an exception to the rule, but just a common story. So this sixty year old wants to send a special thanks to Cookerosa and Ally for helping me with my questions. For now, I'm staying on the board for a few more weeks, but when I'm done with my A.S. at cc will be signing off. Hang in there for most of you who have just begin this is a great source and the information is valuable. It is not anyone's fault at this site when one of us hits a brick wall. The trick is to accept it and go on or just sit around and complain. As for me, I would rather just go on and live my life without my college decree. Well enough said. Best of luck to all who will succeed.

'Sixty year old'.....yes, I understand. I'm 50 and have been trying to figure out WHY I am doing this. Is it to get a job? Well, maybe, but that's not the driving force. Is it to show my children that they can learn all through their life? That's a huge part of it. Is it to ward off Alzheimer's...yes, my grandpa had that and I want nothing to do with that awful disease. I guess I love the mental stimulation just for the sake of learning. So, it's a combination of things.
As for finances, I am blessed, well, spoiled in that my husband is paying for this. He has a job that allows him to do so, but not everyone is in my position. I can see that I would have to think long and hard before doing this if I had to figure out where that $100 would come from every time I tested. I think there should be senior citizen's discounts for everyone over 55!! Hey, even the government gives out social security for those fortunate enough to live to their 'golden years'. And what could be more socially secure than having a better paying job in your 60s?
My advice is to keep learning in whatever you do. Keep reading about the Civil War or the Romans or whatever thrills you. Keep doing those crosswords (the hard ones!) and logic puzzles. Learn something new every day knowing that you are carrying on culture and knowledge and not just sitting in front of the TV staring at a screen.
Good luck with all you do and also, as Alleycat said, God's Blessings to you are yours!

This may not help the original poster, as the prices aren't cheaper than a CLEP, but for others over 55 the below may be useful. I saw a while ago that Lousiana Tech University has reduced tuition to students 55 years and older. Classes are as cheap as $99 a class for online courses, and $39 a class for face to face classes on campus, regardless of residency status. If you have a class you need that you can't test out of, you may want to check out their offerings, especially if they are upper level or your local community college either doesn't offer them or are too expensive. Great idea! Be sure to look for other programs like this, too. For instance, Penn State has a program called GO-60. You can take classes tuition-free and just pay for books. Here is an example of how the program works at one of the branch campuses:
