For those who took courses from Straighterline, do I really need to have the books to pass the course? Trying to save some money! =)

Yes. But shop around for the cheapest price - don't necessarily buy them from the links on the SL site, I find amazon cheaper. I've managed to get through by using older editions of the book in most cases, which are cheaper (although you do need to make sure you're reading the correct chapter to match to the section of the course you're doing, as the order sometimes changes).

No, the lessons definitely don't contain everything. The exams are open book too, so worth having the book available to refer to.

The general theory is that you need the textbook which makes it a little more expensive. I guess we should have people list the required textbooks for each course they've taken that way we can source them over time. In the end it is about perspective $100 per month plus $40 per course plus $100 for a book still isn't bad if you can get the course done in 4 weeks. Otherwise it would be more cost effective to attend your community college were the cost is about $300 dollars per class plus books. SL is for those who can get the job done quickly and don't dawdle along like I usually do!
Don't forget that gaining college credit by taking exams is one of the reason's we're here. That's mainly possible through the flashcards made available by the owner of this forum : InstantCert Plus of course your hard work in learning and reviewing
