Associates at Columbia Southern University
#1
Good morning,

I hope all is well. I am waiting on my response to go back to UMPI, meanwhile, I was looking at some other stuff I might be interested in. I noticed Columbia Southern University, has a Associate in Science for IT. I was considering getting an IT associates a while back. I notice they are a transfer partner with Sophia.

Between Sophia and my local tech school, I actually finished all of Gen Ed, Program Electives, Regular Electives, and 1 or 2 courses of the Major Requirements. This means I just have to take 15 credits, and based on the courses, they look fairly simple for an IT degree. Any thoughts? I don't see much about them on the forum but they look pretty solid.

It is funny that an ad for them came up on Facebook since I am from Columbia SC, but this is in a different state, just the same city name lol. I assumed it was here at first like "I haven't seen this school around" lol. Then I realized it was in a different state.

Anywho. Thanks!

I really would not waste your time or money on another associates - you already have one. If you're wanting to add an IT credential to your resume then I'd suggest the Google IT Support certificate. It can be earned for free through TADA

I agree; another Associate degree won't help you much, if at all. I would focus on your Bachelor's degree and getting what you can for free through TADA. And/or pay for a few other Coursera certificates. You can get an entire year of Coursera Plus for less than the cost of a single class at CSU.
In progress:
TESU - BA Computer Science; BSBA CIS; ASNSM Math & CS; ASBA

Completed:
Pierpont - AAS BOG
Sophia (so many), The Institutes (old), Study.com (5 courses)
ASU: Human Origins, Astronomy, Intro Health & Wellness, Western Civilization, Computer Appls & Info Technology, Intro Programming
Strayer: CIS175, CIS111, WRK100, MAT210

Thanks, everyone! DIdn't know how employers view Associates in IT vs Certificates. I appreciate it.

If you want a degree in IT, I would consider a different school than UMPI. While they are great for the degrees they offer, a BLS is not going to cut it for most employers who want IT experience. I would consider WGU instead. And a whole lot of certs as well.

@learningthehardway, I would focus on three things, certs, degree, experience. You have an AAS emphasis in Business from Pierpont, you're going for UMPI BLS with MIS minor, even though it's not really Info System/IT, it's more management with an IT focus. What you can do for certs, experience is to continue on with your Coursera/TADA/TEEX freebie/cheapie offerings that interest you!
