Art courses/tests

I am looking for fine/visual art courses or tests. I only found Penn Foster Art appreciation. Any ideas? If not, might do PLA or community college.

Sophia has Introduction to Art History and Visual Communications.

The University of ND has several independent study courses. Intro to Fine Arts, Drawing and Color, and Intro to Visual Arts. I would say a CC with an art program is a great place to start.

There's Art of the Western World DSST, but I wouldn't exactly recommend taking it. I was VERY well-prepared, and failed it by 2 or 3 points. I think I've only heard of one or two people passing it. BUT, that said, if you are really desperate, and amazing at art and guessing well on tests, maybe it would be worth a try. I am thinking about retaking it, but only if I had to.
Also, there's CLEP Humanities, which covers art appreciation, music, and some lit. That one, I took before the Art of the WW, and passed it pretty easily.

I took both of those courses and they are pretty straightforward. Art history was a good challenge for me, definitely not a casual course, quite a lot of info to take in.
I really like Sophia but it is just a little too expensive. Even at $200 - $250 the cost would be more bearable.

The one class I would recommend doing at a B/M type school is a class in philosophy. I took Ethics, Asian, and Logic Philosophy courses in person. The latter 2 were worth every second of my personal time spent, including going to temples. That was my Arts and Letters choice. I highly recommend trying 1 of the 2 in person to anyone in need of these sorts of credits. They are the sort of rare classes that benefit from communicating in person.

Sorry that I don't have any advice to the credit race. Just personal experience of the very few in-person courses I ever felt were worth spending my life on.

Agreed. It would be a lot cheaper on our end to send him to the community college for an art class, however, our CC is not as efficient and experienced as an online provider, so it's a clunky process for just one class- I'm going to shell out a few extra bucks for the ease of using Sophia. He's done the free Teams course as well as the free Business course back when they offered it. I like it well enough, but agreed, it's just so expensive. <ugh>

Our CC is great with pricing - $155 for a single course. But when I took a course there, it was $375 for the book!!! I did manage to find an "international version" online for $21 - but although it's the same info, the name of the chapters and the order of them is different, meaning that I had to borrowing the teacher's book to compare, and tab all of the chapters with the correct info so that I did the correct homework. It was a little goofy, but worth the time for that price. Because even renting a book was $100+, and buying it used was $200+.

Oh yeah, and I had to drive about 45 minutes each way to get there.

So, at that time, if I hadn't been able to find the cheap book, it really probably would have made sense to me to pay more for a course like Sophia (they didn't offer that course that I needed, but as an example). $255 plus 90 minutes of driving each day would certainly have seemed equal to $329 to be able to take the course from the comfort of my own home.

When looking at a course provider that is more expensive than you'd like, always factor in your time and the cost of a textbook!
