Highway robbery at the NY DMV

I'm unhappy about the increase in auto tag renewal down here... a year or so ago it was about $35 a year. 2 weeks ago I paid a whopping $88. Crazy!

I'll take 88 bucks any day of the week. My tag renewal was over $200. Hell my trailer renewal that used to be like 30 bucks was over $100 and that's for only one year at least my car is for two years. NY got crazy in september of 2010 when they raised all the fees. Pretty much everything doubled or close to doubled. Also in downstate NY we have some bullshit MTA recovery fee of $25 per year on any registered road use vehicle so all trailers, motorbikes, cars, trucks, etc get hit with a $25 MTA can't balance the books fee annually.

You must travel from home to range/competition and back with minimum deviation or take a chance getting into trouble if pulled over. It sucks! Reminds me that I need to send in my paperwork for the concealed carry multi-state permit; can't use in NJ but it’s great when traveling.

Back to the thread title...NJ license renewal $24 -- crazy that just over the bridge is $188.

I hear you on the gun thing. NY is just as bad. In my county you need a permit just to keep a handgun in your house. Also with respect to the license its only $80.50 for someone with a regular license. It's $180.50 for a commercial license and an extra $8 for someone with a motorcycle endorsement that's why my license was so much. It is still completely ridiculous. A year ago it was 80 or 90 bucks for a commercial renewal and like 40 or 50 bucks for a regular renewal and the motorcycle endorsement fee was like 4 bucks.

But their DMV is so convenient. An AZ resident can order a 30 day temp tag online and print it right off the computer for like 10 bucks and even an out of state resident can get a 3 day limited use temp tag for a buck. That's great when you go to buy a new car from a private party and don't want to ride dirty on the way home.

I should post a picture of my closet/safe/gunroom. There is a copy of my three college diplomas hanging on top of my guns. The Military Police look at me funny when they print out the gun registration list of all my guns every time I register a new one on base. What can I say, I love to shoot at the range, my daughter loves it, and we do it for hunting season and for sport/recreation. But gun safety is a MUST and she is all over it at 8 years old. Her curiosity about guns is gone. I'll be taking her to shoot her first deer when I go home on R&R. My next gun is a Marlin Model 1895 in 45-70 .cal in case anyone is wondering. Big Grin

But back to the license plate registration, I think in Texas they are $75-ish a year, along with the $14 yearly vehicle inspection sticker we have to get.
