Are ALEKS credits accepted by most major colleges?

From what I understand, ALEKS credits are accepted by most major colleges and universities. Is this correct? I just want to make sure in case I decide to transfer to different schools. Thanks!

check if your school accepts ACE credit.

if so there should be no problem because ALEKS falls under ACE.

No one can answer what "most major colleges" do. ALEKS is non-traditional credit because it is ACE evaluated as opposed to being issued by a college. But, it is the TYPE of credit that can be "accepted" (transferred) by "major" (regionally accredited) colleges because of ACE. It's like asking if CLEP is accepted- not only is it up to the college, but then within the college it may/may not be accepted by your department. Example- say your college generically accepts CLEP credit. Now, the same college might not accept CLEP biology if you were a science major, but could accept CLEP biology if you are a history major. Also, you could take a class at your local community college and have it not transfer- but it is the type of credit that should, generically speaking, transfer. Hope that helps.

So, it is the TYPE of credit that can be accepted- specifically, it's up to the college/university you are earning your bachelor's degree from.

That makes a lot of sense. I was just wondering if ALEKS is about as universally accepted as CLEP is. For example, someone who isn't sure what he wants to major in or which college he wants to attend - which would be a safer way to earn credits? ALEKS or CLEP?

For me, I am planning to enroll in TESC studying for a BSBA in General Management. I had to have a Precalulus credit, so I wanted to choose between ALEKS and CLEP. I know that TESC accepts either, but I was just thinking about a "worst-case scenario."

If you are going to TESC- without a doubt take either. TESC's college catalog states that they accept ACE evaluated credit (other colleges may or may not have that in their catalogs too)and there is a history of people here who have used ALEKS at TESC... so it's really your call. There are pros and cons to both. Cost wise, I think you can do ALEKS for less $ (as little as $20). Speed wise, I think you an do CLEP faster! On the other hand, ALEKS means working in your own home- CLEP means going to a testing center. ALEKS is ongoing until you pass, CLEP is pass/fail.

If you think you are not going to TESC, I'd say you could take CLEP simply because colleges know about CLEP and MY OPINION is that you'll be able to call/email any college and get an instant transfer answer about that test, and then can decide if you will take it. Uhhhhh probably not so with ALEKS only because any college will need you to forward an ACE official transcript (after you actually earned credit) to evaluate it before they say yes or no. Based on that, I'd say CLEP would be a safer choice. But again, if you are pretty sure you are going to TESC, either one works. (ALEKS is new, so that's a factor too)

I hope you didn't think I was down on ALEKS, I'm not- I love it and my son is using it too. And, you could always use ALEKS as the study method for CLEP preparation- then you will have the credit and prep for the CLEP.
