BA in English at TESC - Help with degree plan please
#1
Hello everyone,
I just found out about the process of testing out of a degree through a college like TESC, and have been busily searching the internet for all the information to get started. I have made up this preliminary plan for a BA in English at TESC. Do you guys think that this plan will work in general? Here is the TESC page for their English major: Thomas Edison State College: English. I have linked to my degree plan in a nicely-formatted PDF file, since the orderly table I made in Word didn't copy into the post.

This is my plan: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/28434273/TESC_B...e_Plan.pdf.

Also, does TESC charge to accept CLEP and DSST credits? My understanding is that they process your previously earned credits as part of the application and enrollment process.

Thanks in advance,
Evan

TESC doesn't charge to accept credits, but they do charge a large fee up front to cover a year of enrollment. That fee covers exams or other credits brought in and allows you to register for courses.

I would like to point out a few corrections:

-English composition with essay is no longer an exam, you will take College Composition (and not take College Composition Modular). The difference from the old one is the use of a second essay asking you to cite your source (in this case they give you two documents to use for source material). Just keep that in mind when you study and ignore any outdated material you see on the old English composition with essay exam.

-Your area of study is not doable at TESC. The courses you listed are not offered by TESC even though they are on the list you found to showcase the degree. TESC specializes in the transfer of credit and therefore doesn't offer most of the courses they show in the sample degree plan options. Here is your area of study with course codes:

CLEP Analyze and Interpret (Part II of split) - LIT-292

Survey of Literature I & II (this course does not exist that I can find, I believe it refers to taking either a part I & II of a basic American or English Lit course). I would say this would eat up one of your exams. Lets say American Literature goes here. - LIT-111/LIT-112

Latin American Literature - This is another course that doesn't exist at TESC that I can find. Courses listed on the grid (Thomas Edison State College: English) are not all offered at TESC. You could bring this course in from another school but cannot take it at TESC. Check out English and Lit courses listed at Thomas Edison State College: Course Offerings
The course code is SPA-382 if you were to find the course elsewhere. See the PLA search page at Thomas Edison State College: Course Offerings to search for course codes by course name, noting once again that this list shows courses in the system and not a list of what they offer.

Capstone - LIB-495

History of English Language - This is another course that doesn't exist at TESC that I can find. Courses listed on the grid (Thomas Edison State College: English) are not all offered at TESC. You could bring this course in from another school but cannot take it at TESC. Check out English and Lit courses listed at Thomas Edison State College: Course Offerings
The course code for that also doesn't appear in the system.

Advanced Persuasive Writing - This is another course that doesn't exist at TESC that I can find. Courses listed on the grid (Thomas Edison State College: English) are not all offered at TESC. You could bring this course in from another school but cannot take it at TESC. Check out English and Lit courses listed at Thomas Edison State College: Course Offerings
The course code is ENG-319 if you were to find the course elsewhere. See the PLA search page at Thomas Edison State College: Course Offerings to search for course codes by course name, noting once again that this list shows courses in the system and not a list of what they offer.

CLEP American Lit - See above under Survey of Lit I & II

CLEP English Lit - LIT-208/LIT-209

By my count you have only three upper level credits available if you only do testing and TESC only using your grid (and that is the capstone). You need to rework the plan with courses that are in the database of courses offered Thomas Edison State College: Course Offerings (not using the grid for the degree) or explore other schools to take the courses and bring them over. You will find very little flexibility in that degree if you only do traditional coursework at TESC and testing. If that is the degree you want and TESC is the school you choose, submit the credits you have and work an advisor to plan out the rest of the degree. Unless you do some Prior Learning Assessments (PLA's) you will probably not be very happy with the choices offered for that degree. If you do a search in the upper right for BA English you will find many posts which show how others have pulled credits together for this degree, just note that the choices you made are not possible unless you transfer them in.
My completed "non-traditional" credits include 27 credits from CLEP, 30 credits from DSST, 6 credits from ALEKS, 19 credits from FEMA courses including PDS, 3 credits from NFA courses, 10 credits from ACE Workplace Training, 3 credits from a TESC TECEP exam, and 3 credits from a TESC PLA course.

Alright. Thank you so much for your help. My error in thinking that those courses actually existed at TESC. I have reworked my plan based on courses offered at TESC and taking several Independent Study courses from BYU. Here is the reworked plan: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/28434273/TESC_B...e_Plan.pdf.

Looks good. Two things for you:

-Make sure you get an updated list of FEMA courses so you don't take any you can't use (ask the school once enrolled or search this site).

-Once you are enrolled, be sure to schedule a phone conference with an advisor to plan out whatever is left at that point. The coolest thing is that you tell them the source of the credits and they can plan them in so there are no surprises when the evaluators get the credits.

Good luck and welcome to TESC...

so you have to do 6 courses physically. interesting.
what would you guys reccomend to do instead of those 24 credits of Fema?
That is money saving.
Oh and any idea of the cost of those 6 courses?

Also heard I could do some of these maybe at ohio U
http://www.ohio.edu/ecampus/future/tuition.htm

I am a non resident. it is a little confusing for me..

would I be spending... 222? or 111? per credit. very confising stuff here. my brain is dieing.
