I think it's a self-perpetuating cycle. They charge a lot of money so they need to pay a lot of money to attract students and funding. Then they need to charge more and get more funding in order to be able to pay the salaries. And on and on.

You're paying for this man's expertise which took years to accumulate. He is well trained. If you want a highly skilled doctor to teach or be a chancellor, then yes it's going to cost serious cash. Why would they give up a lucrative practice to teach or be a chancellor? They wouldn't. Actually a million a year isn't that much for a chancellor position. Look at other universities. These people aren't cheap and there aren't a ton of them to go around. He has 6,000 faculty under him and 5,000 students. That's a lot to be running. The football coach makes more than double. Why? That's the salary you should be questioning.
