American Lit CLEP and REA
#1
My 9th grader is finishing up his American Lit class, and I'm thinking about having him sit the CLEP this summer. Here's my dilemma. The REA (my favorite exam book on the planet) released their current edition in 2014, but the American Lit CLEP is showing exam revision in 2015. That makes me a tad nervous, so I emailed REA and they *assured me* that their book was on point for the current exam content. Of course I'm skeptical.

So, this is a long shot, but have any of you taken the newest Am Lit versions (3/2015) and used the REA? Thoughts?

I have not taken the American Lit. CLEP, but I am studying for the Humanities general CLEP. People have said that half of the humanities test covers American/English lit, so maybe checking out the Lit. portions of those study guides would help.
Something else might be the current year CLEP book, by college board. That should have current information that you could compare to REA. I got mine from the library so it didn't cost. Smile
Hopefully this helps. I am a homeschooled senior, but am just starting to take the CLEP/DSST's.
Way to go for homeschooling!

Musictester, I have to ask: what kind of music and what kind of tests? ABRSM? LCM? TCL? Something else? Smile

Smile For the music, mainly classical/baroque oratorio rep, with a voice/piano concentration.
For the tests, I just meant CLEP/DSST academic tests. All of those music tests are great, though! I haven't taken them, but have heard a lot of good things about the abrsm.
My username does make it sound like I am testing music! haha
On a different "note", have you taken the humanities CLEP? If so, any advice? I'm taking it in a few weeks.
Thanks and have a blessed Memorial Day!

Something else that may help is using quizlet flashcards/vocab. That has helped me with lists of authors/works or techniques. I can't guarantee that the information is current, but at least it is free. You don't have to have an account just to view the sets; you only need one if you want to make your own.
Also, on collegeboard's website, they list several anthologies to read in preparation for the test. Go to that test's page and then click study resources. Maybe comparing those with REA would help to see if it is current.
Have a good Memorial weekeend!

I haven't taken any of the music exams, although I know you can get college credit for the diploma levels on up. I took the Humanities CLEP before you were born, so I suspect it has changed since then lol.

That is really good to know about the music exams! I will have to look into them, since I am planning on being a music major.
That's ok about the humanities. Wink
