American Lit
#1
Has anyone taken this CLEP? I havent found too much information on this test. I was curious how long people studied for it and how difficult it was. Any advice would be great! I do plan on taking the A & I Lit first and then this one. Has anyone else taken both?

I've taken A&I Lit and the GRE Literature in English test. A&I Lit is good prep for American Lit. Beyond that, I would recommend
  • The Complete Idiot's Guide to American Literature (it's a fun read, and very informative)
  • Norton Anthology to American Literature Vol. 1 & Vol. 2 (a good resource, probably available at your library)
  • Wikipedia, lots of Wikipedia
  • For a bit more coverage, the Vade Mecum is wonderful
Also, make sure you check out the specific exam feedback for American Literature. Don't spend too much time reading entire works. Coverage is important for a test like this.

Read the Complete Idiot's Guide to American Literature
Read the 101 Barron's Study Keys to American Literature

Go to Sparknotes.com and read the summaries of the works you find in the study books listed above.

This test is more about what books are about and who wrote them. Not about the authors themselves so much.

If you use the Literature flashcards in the Humanities section, that will help you too.

Good luck!!! That's what I did (above) and I passed with a 66 after just 6 days of study.
